One of the most compelling things about @AndrewYang’s campaign has been its progression from a fringe internet phenomenon to a mainstream Democratic campaign. I believe the new TV ad demonstrates that this was intentional.

Yang’s campaign first gained traction among the ironic edgelords of 4chan and Reddit. The alt-right made Yang memes as a parody of Yang’s “utopian” policies. But they didn’t know that Andrew was deradicalizing their base by creating a positive insurgency — the Yang Gang.
By capturing disaffected young men — the ones most vulnerable to persuasion by the far right and far left — Yang built a passionate, evangelical tribe that included within it the potential to build a bridge to independents and moderates and capture the core of the electorate.
The Yang campaign worked from the fringe inward. After the Joe Rogan podcast, the campaign accelerated and pivoted away from right-wing and libertarian outreach to progressives, snatching up a legion of burnt-out Berners. We’re still in the tail end of this phase.
After building arguably the most unlikely coalition in politics, the Yang campaign is finally ready to go mainstream. They’ve spent months laying groundwork for this transition. Now, they’re going to leverage Yang’s talent for synthesis to punch through the moderate lane.
Yang is not, strictly speaking, a moderate. But he is rational and balanced in a way that most progressives simply can’t afford to be, because staking out extreme positions is conflated with seriousness, regardless of the evidentiary deficiencies in those positions.
This makes Yang the ideal outsider to poach the Biden/Buttigieg/Warren lane, because he has the cool temper of a moderate and the visionary policies of a true progressive. And what do all three of those candidates lack that Yang worked hard to build?

The fucking #YangGang.
There is no radical core group of Warren, Biden, or Buttigieg supporters. The Sanders crowd didn’t bother to flip right-wingers because they were too busy calling them all Nazis, whether they deserved it or not. So their radical core group has a narrow lane, weakening them.
#YangGang, our ideological, cultural, political, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity is our strength. We’ve got a motlier crew than anyone else in the game.

Now, with Yang ads playing for the first time in the early states, the next stage has arrived.
Our passion and energy has created a political movement that defies categorization. A progressive movement actually defined by forward progress, not creaky ideological fault lines. This gives Andrew unique flexibility with approach — his ads don’t have to pander to a narrow base.
When mainstream Dems finally see Andrew in ads, it’s a bigger win than the debates. It hits them where they live. And with Evelyn appearing by his side in ads and on the campaign trail, the male-centric appeal of the early campaign has been shed like a cocoon.
The polls underestimate our strength. The media doesn’t know what to do with us. The other candidates are confused by us. But when lifelong Democratic voters see Andrew & Evelyn in these excellent ads, they’re going to fall in love with them.
Waiting until this moment to unleash Evelyn’s powers, and to drop big endorsements this Friday, is not random. It’s the starting gun for the push into the Democratic mainstream.

The real race is about to begin.

Let’s win.
