THREAD: As House Dems prepare for their first floor vote on impeachment, @AriMelber breaks down Dems’ newly-released rules which could govern the process by which they continue their impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
WATCH: Recall Speaker Pelosi, who is now barreling towards tomorrow's key vote, spent months holding back an impeachment inquiry, as top committee chairs deferred to a slow-roll approach.
.@AriMelber on tomorrow’s vote of House Resolution 660 - the first floor vote on a path to impeaching Trump:
“Politically, this vote will test or show if Pelosi has a united caucus on impeachment. Constitutionally, it creates the blueprint for impeachment.”
.@AriMelber identifies three takeaways from House Dems' impeachment rules:

First, the "rules pave the way for public impeachment hearings – which Trump's GOP defenders say would be more fair," empowering not only "Congress, but top committee lawyers to do the questioning."
Secondly, the provisions give Donald Trump protections and options, given his past avoidance, stonewalling and defiance of these probes, to send whoever he chooses to Congress to defend his case.
Chairman Nadler says he will operate under "serious procedures" that confer rights for the "President, equal to those provided during the Nixon and Clinton inquires."

If the impeachment resolution passes, House Dems will give Trump even more protections than Clinton and Nixon.
Lastly, the most pivotal revelation discloses the Intelligence Committe is playing the role of primary investigators, unlike past Nixon and Clinton cases which included a special counsel.

"Monday night I appeared with Michael Cohen [on The Beat]," says Jennifer Weisselberg, "I spoke about how I know [Allen Weisselberg is] hiding money in escrow... There's definitely tax fraud. There's definitely tax evasion. For the first time, they seem really nervous."
Jennifer Weisselberg says after her interview, she received an eviction notice that she views "as a threat."

A Black woman who was removed from her car at gunpoint with four underage family members by Aurora, Colorado, police officers last year has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city and police officials. Police incorrectly believed Brittney Gilliam had stolen the vehicle...
Her attorney David Lane joined @AriMelber to discuss her case, asserting: "She was trying to show the police her registration and her license plate number matched the registration. The police wouldn't look at a piece of paper to determine that this was not a stolen car."
"These kids had been for weeks and months seeing on the news every night white police officers killing African Americans for no reason whatsoever. And these little kids get pulled out of a car at gunpoint." - attorney David Lane on the incident

Did you know that most of the people in our jails are innocent?
Under America's cash bail system, if you are rich, you’re innocent until proven guilty and you prepare for trial at home. If you aren't -- you're "innocent until proven guilty" -- but you're stuck in jail until trial, because you can't pay bail.
As @AriMelber points out: being in jail doesn't feel very innocent. It also hampers your ability to prepare a defense.

America's racial challenge is a huge issue in the Trump-era. That may sound obvious, but it is actually a long way from the misplaced talk around 2008 that "Obama's election alone somehow cured America" of all the work left to do.
"American racism does not fade on its own or dissipate after a few breakthroughs, no matter how big." @AriMelber
As @arimelber explains, systemic racism would never end in one night. To understand that racism is systemically embedded in our laws and prisons and economy and in our brains is to understand that it endures by default unless it is explicitly uprooted and reformed.

THREAD: In a special report, @AriMelber analyzes new ways campaign spending can shape the race, online and off, in a election where "democracy is now literally more expensive for candidates than it's ever been before."

@AriMelber Democrats now have two billionaires contenders, with debate newcomer Mike Bloomberg being the richest person to ever run for president. While few billionaires have self-funded races before, Trump is the first person to self fund a primary and win.

WATCH: Multi-million dollar media buys are almost a requirement for getting near the nomination. Federal courts have cut back laws that regulate campaign spending, which leaders in both parties have warned may "cripple the political process."
