Now I explain my stance in good faith, and you guys laugh at my risks & ascribe dark motives to a position you instantly prove reasonable.
@maxseddon @ElenaChernenko I wish you guys the best, I truly do. But please try and understand that it doesn't take a conspiracy to explain why it's hard to believe you guys care more about me or my family than you do about the next 750 words.

@Viss I appreciate the point, but don't agree with the premise, because the language of consent is misapplied. 1) many of the most abusive apps today provide truly necessary function with no opt-out, if only due to network effect. 2) TOS are unfair, incomprehensible, change every week
@Viss So: I don't believe a contract with wildly unfair terms applied to society at large can be considered valid. But if it were valid, it is still be misunderstood. And if it was somehow understood, it was still certainly signed under duress--out of necessity rather than consent.
@Viss This is the long way of saying you can't hold the world at ransom and then claim, because every six year-old "agreed to survive," that they are bound by the hilarious unequal and exploitative terms they signed under duress. I say no, that is not consent.

I asked to see a copy of censored passages, and was given a list of a few of the worst examples. I'm going to post them right here on Twitter, and we're going to translate them and expose exactly what the censors were trying to hide. Let's use Twitter for something good.
Let us compile a correct and unabridged version of #PermanentRecord to publish freely online in Chinese, by assembling a cadre of translators to expose every shameful redaction the censors demanded. We will work in service to the greater Republic of Letters and a better internet.

Much reporting on LE access demands (or "concerns") overlooks that the powers they have today are unprecedented and abnormal in a way our constitutional system does not anticipate. Status quo "should" be presumptively undesirable, yet editorial tone implies otherwise
@AlecMuffett @jenvalentino @runasand @nytimes @gabrieldance @SteveBellovin From a human rights perspective, a global reduction in mass surveillance capability is a desirable reversion to the mean. It is astonishing, and I would argue discrediting, for those claiming a public safety interest advocating for any new means of surveillance "at scale."
@AlecMuffett @jenvalentino @runasand @nytimes @gabrieldance @SteveBellovin Surveillance at scale is precisely the problem, because it is an expression of influence at scale. If you look at the problems we're dealing with in almost every country, they are variations on this theme.
