A BBC investigation has revealed that Instagram is being used as a slave market in some countries.

I'm putting together this talk for Øredev and I'm in the real happy part of the talk where I show all the ways our platforms, technologies, and companies have acted in ways indistinguishable from literal weapons developers in the past year or so.
This slide will be fun.
This one too
One of the reasons I've moved away from talking about "omg machine learning encodes social bias!!!" is because it's frankly three or four levels past what is actually the problem.

The problem isn't that our systems will inherit our racism.

The problem is we build weapons.
Imagine trying to talk to a Microsoft machine learning engineer right now about how we should be more carefully controlling for potential algorithmic bias when they just took ten BILLION dollars from the DoD to help do more bombings of Yemeni funerals.
The whole complex secondary and tertiary effects controllable by ethical standards is great when you're not basically Raytheon but the bad news is these companies are now basically Raytheon.
Trust me on this, I worked in defense for eight years. I have enough blood on my hands. I know how the spin works. Incidentally, all that shit the tankies love attacking me for: they're, for all except for one bit, absolutely right.
Where they're wrong is exactly the message that needs to be sent: when it's the future that matters, it's always possible to do better.

But how do we force Microsoft or Github to do better?

How do we get to have conversations about controlling algorithmic bias be relevant?
It's simple: collectivize.
The question isn't whether the tech industry needs to act with ethics.

The question is whether it's going to get there on its own or wait for the revolution to get it there.
