A new survey from KINU, a SK government-funded think tank, on South Korean perceptions of the US-ROK alliance, Donald Trump, Japan, and the North Korean nuclear talks. Good stuff here.
Over 96% of South Koreans (!) oppose Seoul paying more for the cost of the US troop presence, as Trump has demanded (72% support maintaining the status quo; 25% want a decrease)
Despite rejecting Trump's cost-sharing demands, a broad majority of South Koreans (91%) recognize the necessity of @USForcesKorea. Even after a hypothetical Korean reunification, a majority of South Koreans (54%) say a US troop presence would still be necessary.
South Koreans also continue to overwhelmingly view the US as more important than China to South Korea's security and economy, the survey suggests.
"While there was a concern for Korea's anti-American sentiment in the early 2000s, now no prominent evidence of such a sentiment is found," the report says.
But notably, the survey suggests that South Koreans think both the United States and China are doing a bad job as global leaders (71% disapprove of the US' global leadership; 81% disapprove of China's).
South Koreans also don't seem to think very much of Donald Trump. He gets roughly the same rating as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping in this survey. Also, South Koreans don't like Shinzo Abe very much.
72% of South Koreans support Seoul's recent decision to exit GSOMIA, an intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan, the report suggests. Interestingly though, 83% would like to see a summit between Korea and Japan as soon as possible.
Extreme hypothetical here, but interesting findings regarding which side South Koreans would supposedly support if North Korea were to go to war with Japan.
South Koreans are becoming more pessimistic about talking with Kim Jong Un, this survey suggests. But almost 40% still support "dialogue and compromise."
Anyway, there's a lot more interesting findings here. But I'm not gonna tweet em, folks. I'm just glad we have new data. Cc @benjaminaengel @davidvolodzko
