1. Comparing “killing 310,000 Democrats & freeing their Black slaves” to “freeing babies alive from the womb” is the weirdest civil war threat I’ve seen from the Right.

But I’d be remiss not to point out that right-wing Christian ideologues do regularly draw a direct line here.
2. Christian Right gaslighting often takes the form of claiming the legacy of historical victories everyone now agrees are good things (and taming their radicalism in the process—see white evangelicals quoting Martin Luther King, for example).

But it gets weirder.

3. Right-wing Christians love to claim they’d have been on the right side of history w/o ever having to question or challenge their own privilege in any way. Thus they assert a parallel between freeing slaves and fighting Hitler on the one hand, and opposing abortion on the other
4. One prominent form this takes is the use of abortion as a defensive fetish. If they claim abortion is literally another Holocaust, they can pretend they’re “fighting Hitler” while siding with American Nazis. It’s the worst kind of LARPing.

5. For more on how abortion functions as a defensive fetish for conservative, mostly white evangelicals, see:

6. But wait, there’s more! Evangelicals and fundamentalists like to blame all human horrors on “the fall” and sin, which they equate with atheism. This godlessness, they claim, is what leads to horrors. Pay no attention when it’s Christians who carry out atrocities!
7. This approach is on display at The Creation Museum and Ark Encounter, which @julieingersoll, @QuiverfullTwee1, and I visited back in May. Slavery, the Holocaust, and abortion are depicted together and all blamed on godlessness.

8. The Creation Museum and Ark Encounter, two unaccredited museums that are quite visually and materially impressive, are part of Ken Ham’s Answers in Genesis “ministry.”

The displays in question take a “color blind” approach to race, which is another kind of sleight of hand.
9. I suppose it’s better than the explicitly racist Christian beliefs that are still out there, such as the “curse of Ham” and “serpent seed” theologies. It makes all humans equal before God—in theory, but not in practice since ofc God wouldn’t like vengeance, so no reparations..
10. But here’s the kicker: all humans are (in theory) equal before God, including “unborn babies,” who are totes people! So women and all who can get pregnant become less equal than men. And anyone rebelling against God also gets to be less equal. Sorry, fellow queers 🤷‍♀️🙃
11. For a great illustration of the lengths to which even prominent, “respectable” evangelicals will run with this toxic thinking, see August’s #EpicChristianFails blog post on Al Mohler claiming “to be human is to be a parent”

#SaturdayMotivation 🙃
12. And for more on The Creation Museum and the kind of toxic Christian apologetics (defense of the faith) it represents, see my latest for @RDispatches:

13. In conclusion, don’t underestimate the ways in which would-be “respectable” right-wing Christians, authoritarian Catholics and Protestants and LDS, will self-servingly manipulate facts to make it seem like they have humane values when they do not. Don’t fall for the rhetoric.
14. And yes, they may be deceiving themselves. But the poisonous fruit is the same.
