/13 Walkers Ate My Science Homework: A First Year Student Seminar Course on Science and “The Walking Dead”: Start Thread #POPC1 picture of a character from...
/13 I’m Kris Larsen, an astronomy professor with 30 years at Central Connecticut State University. I have taught freshman seminars for over 20 years. One of my faves used The Walking Dead as its central theme. #POPC1 Image
/13 My first year student science seminar for nonscience majors challenged students to think critically about controversial topics, debate using scientific terminology, and come to an understanding that science is everywhere. #POPC1 Image
/13 Each day covered a different topic in Sci & Society and each lecture included a discussion of how the topic was used in TWD. E.g. informed human consent - the episode “TS-19” had a CDC scientist experimenting on his dead wife. #POPC1
/13 Assignments included homework on viewed episodes and the novel “Zombie Autopsies”, take home final, and two projects. There was also a tour of two labs to see protocols in action. #POPC1 Image
/13 Project 1: In groups students created zombie-themed public service pamphlets to educate classmates about available campus protocols and resources. Here are two examples. #POPC1 Image
/13 The class held an informational fair on preparedness at the Student Center and gave out their pamphlets. The following posters were used to grab the attention of the students passing by. #POPC1 Image
/13 Some of the students (and myself) got into the spirit by dressing as characters from the series. I played the very first zombie shown in the series! #POPC1 Image
/13 We also had a season premiere party in the freshman-only dorm with foods featured in the series. #POPC1 Image
/13 The individual final project was a paper and presentation on a zombie movie, series, novel, etc. in which the student identified depictions of 4-5 issues discussed in class. #POPC1 Image
/13 There was also a take-home essay exam. #POPC1 Image
/13 Many students stayed in touch with me long after the course ended. Those who became Resident Assistants in dorms or Student Orientation leaders recommended the course to new freshmen. #POPC1
