[Thread] Picking your first programming language: what to consider and why it doesn’t really matter. [ #30DaysOfThreads ]
So here you are, bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to start on an entirely new journey. You’ve been following some hashtags like #100DaysOfCode & #TechTwitter for some time. Heck, even a few of your favorite accounts talk about it.
You decide you’ll start today...no tomorrow...next week...because well you don’t actually know where to start at all.

Have no fear. The Internet princess is here to help! Truth is, learning a programming language is completely and 100% up to you.
I know that you are probably used to someone telling you exactly what to do — whether that is from a professor or your current boss but in tech and in programming - THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER.
That said, let’s look at a few tech gigs that may scratch your programming itch - these are by no means ALL the jobs in tech - truth is there are far too many and I got tired of typing 🙃🤣. The photos following each are the languages you’ll use!
Front-End Web Dev • Works with languages to create the prettiest, dopest, trillest websites & web apps we know and love. It isn’t news to us that the internet is huge and something always needs to be created. You’ll design a websites layout, choose colors, fonts, photos, etc
Back-End Web Dev • Works with programming languages to make sure users get the information they are looking for when clicking aimlessly at all hours of the day. So where front end may design the colors for a blog post - the back end finds the blog post by searching databases.
Android Developer • Ooo software development interests you aye? As an Android developer you’ll design applications for the Android marketplace. You’ll also: troubleshoot and debug problems within the app, work with APIs, think critically (A LOT), work with an android team.
iOS Developer • Responsible for developing apps — you guessed it — for iOS devices. You’ll need to be on the up & up when it comes to how exactly iOS operates as far as common practices (frameworks). You’ll work with plenty of iOS team members, think critically, & problem solve.
Information Security • Prioritizes protecting business assets including intellectual property and ALL other data. You decide who gets access to what, monitor for fishy activity, and determine when data gets the boot.
Cybersecurity • focuses on protecting public data, hardware, & software from meanie butts (attackers). The goal is to limit risk and protect assets. (Infosec is a subset) Think — hacking! There’s much more to be said about CyberSec & InfoSec but far too much to go into here.
Data Scientist • Analytical experts and master mathematicians! They collect data that looks like nonsense to you & I and transform it into something we can read. Look for patterns/trends in data. Solve problems using data. Work with machine learning & deep learning.
Untouched topics: UX/UI, Visual Design, Digital Marketing, WordPress Developer, + a million and ten other things. Want a link? Here ya go: thebalancecareers.com/list-of-inform…
Okay so now that you know your languages, what you want to do, and where you should begin...let’s discuss HOW.
What You’ll Need:

1. A computer + WiFi 💻
2. A good attitude ✨
3. Pen & Paper (for notes) 📝
4. Moral support (me duh) 😇
5. Some resources to get started! 🔗
