It's #InternationalMensDay. Let's talk about that!
So, a hundred years ago we were all saying "blimey" and riding around on stupidly large bicycles, two hundred years ago everyone worked in string factories and died of dirt, and three hundred years ago... I dunno, dinosaurs?
What I'm saying is that our brains aren't built for this world. It moves too fast. When i was born, a mobile phone was so large that other objects slowly moved towards them. Now, I've had splinters bigger than the latest iPhone.
So why the fuck do you keep telling yourself that you're "fine"? The fuck does "fine" even mean in this world?
Imagine taking a brain that was originally designed to climb trees and eat fucking random fruit, and saying "yeah, I'll use this to navigate the most complex, bizzare and fast moving society ever created"? Why would you do that and think it can cope?
If you're a man and under 50 then the thing most likely to kill you, is you. Men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women. Why? Because we just don't talk about how hard things get for our dumb-ass monkey brains.
Therapy has taught me a secret that I'm willing to share today. It's OK to not be OK. Cars don't run on empty, an empty fridge can't feed anyone, and you can't look after others without looking after you.
So today of all days, just talk to someone. Anyone. A good friend, a professional, a family member. Just talk. Let them know the things that aren't right inside. Refuel yourself. It's hard, believe me I get that, but you'll be a better man for it.
A few additional points.
- Trans men are men.
- Good male rolemodels include Mr Rogers, Terry Crews and Wierd Al.
- Bad male rolemodels include Piers Morgan and anyone Piers Morgan likes.
- Don't listen to podcasts at 2x speed. Listen to better podcasts.
