Good morning! Time for day two of the @theNASEM 2019 summit. I'll be starting the day in session B, Increasing Transparency Around Findings of Responsibility and Administrative Action #AcademiaToo #MeTooSTEM
@theNASEM Panelists:
Jennifer Richter, Univ of Tennessee Knoxville
Brenda Tracy @STEcampaign
Nancy Chi Cantalupo, Barry Univ School of Law
Mod: Frazier Benya
@theNASEM @STEcampaign P1: Jennifer - Associate Vice Chancellor and Director
Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the Office of Equity and Diversity

-How do we as an institution change the culture & be effective about this? One answer is more transparency. How much you reveal is for each univ to determine
@theNASEM @STEcampaign -How do we forewarn victims about changes in transparency, journalist requests for information? Who else do we notify? How do we prep? What will victims need? How do we learn from each experience?
@theNASEM @STEcampaign "A victims pain does not equal our narrative" something that Jennifer keeps in mind during the Title IX process. Transparency & respect for victims need to be balanced.
@theNASEM @STEcampaign P2: Brenda - campus visits include working w athletics but also student groups, title ix, admins.

"[After my gang rape] Community betrayal pushed me to a dark place. Had I not had my two sons, I absolutely wouldn't be here. I would have committed suicide."
@theNASEM @STEcampaign "These are life and death issues. And there's generational trauma. If you think my sons weren't affected by being raised by a depressed, suicidal mother, you'd be wrong. I see them struggle. But those men caused that."
@theNASEM @STEcampaign "I cannot rationalize good people doing nothing. When you say nothing, you're doing something. When you do nothing, you're doing something."

Thank you for sharing your story @brendatracy24.
@theNASEM @STEcampaign @brendatracy24 "I almost didn't share my story. It wasn't courage. I woke up wanting to die for 16 years. I spoke up bc I thought maybe, just maybe the next day I wouldn't want to die. It was an act of desperation."

When she came forward, her community rallied. OSU publicly apologized.
@theNASEM @STEcampaign @brendatracy24 The community and those involved came forward & were transparent. The police admitted they lied, that they threw the rape kit in the trash, the DA admitted they knew and lied.

"It pushed me to a point of healing"
