Many people were a bit annoyed that Hill had a strong accent. As @illdiscourse said yesterday, it was a negative. This is why in her opening statement she made a point to talk about her accent. See next

She did this to evoke a sub conscious sympathy from folks listening, and deter any criticism that what sounded like a “foreigner” would have a position of such stature in our government. There is absolutely no other reason to include this. She was concerned as well.
She wanted the people hearing that to silently cheer for how great America is that we don’t discriminate in this way, while at the same time lend cover for her accent. I personally didn’t really care BEFORE she said that. Afterwards? I saw her manipulation and cringed.
