Some key points on party commitments on #healthcare #highereducation as indicated in their manifestos.
First, a reminder of @councilofdeans asks:
Growing #nursing workforce is central to @Conservatives :
Aside from the commitment to 50,000 more nurses that has been heavily commented on, plans include:
1. £5-8k annual maintenance grants for students
2. 14,000 new undergraduate nursing students
Still @Conservatives
3. 5,000 new nursing degree apprenticeships
4. 7,500 extra nursing associates
5. Increase NHS funding by 29% by 2023
6. No reduction of tuition fees but focus on interest rates to reduce burden on students
Still @Conservatives :
7. @officestudents role strengthened
8. Hit target of 2.4% GDP spent on #research and #development
9. Invest in robotics and artificial intelligence
10. Continuation of EU collaboration @EU_H2020
Moving to @labour now:
1. Abolish tuition fees and bring back maintenance grants
2. Reintroduce bursary for #nurses #midwives and #AHPs but provide no detail on any cap on places.
3. Plan to recruit 4.500 more health visitors and school nurses.
Still @labour :
4. Increase spending across health service by 4.3% a year.
5. Somewhat critical of NHS Long term plan as they see strategy as a 'cover' for privatisation.
6. Repeal health and social care act 2012
Still @labour :
7. Reintroduce responsibilities of the English Health Secretary to provide a comprehensive universal healthcare system.
8. Legislation for safe staffing
9. Agenda for change into law
10. Introduction of a National Education Service
Still @labour :
11. Transform apprenticeship levy arrangements to make it easier to spend levy
12. Target of 3% GDP to be spent on research and development by 2030.
13. Recognition of freedom of movement.
Moving to @LibDems :
1. Introduction of maintenance grants for nursing students.
2. Produce national workforce strategy.
3. Increase spending #NHS by £7 billion a year.
4. Introduce statutory independent budget monitoring body for health and social care.
Still @LibDems :
5. Review higher education spending and consider reform for access, participation and quality.
6. Strengthen role of @officestudents.
7. Introduce student mental health charter.
8. Ethical recruitment for overseas recruits informed by WHO.
Still @LibDems :
9. Brexit would pose serious threat to the NHS and university sector.
10. Roadmap to be published on how spending on research and development would be increased to 3% of GDP. Target of 2.4% by 2027.
Analysis on the 3 parties:
They all want to introduce maintenance support for nursing students. Labour extend to midwifery and AHPs while Libdems only for some nursing disciplines and regions. All parties commit to increase spending on the NHS.
Only Conservatives mention Augar review. However, some parties are proposing radical changes to higher education funding. Labour would abolish tuition fees.
Differing views on future of Office for Students: Conservatives and Libdems would strengthen its role, Labour would incorporate it within its new National Education Service. Both Labour and Libdems would abolish Ofsted but Conservatives would keep it.
Different views on migration:
Conservatives to introduce new regime outside of current freedom of movement. Other parties want to maintain freedom of movement and look favourably on it.
