I met a first-time @TheGreenParty voter today in #Stroud. She'd voted Tory her whole life.

This is what she told me* #Thread

*With my own thoughts added in :)
Firstly she said "she didn't trust Boris"

This is not an uncommon view both on the doorstep and in polling. Remember though, that although Boris in widely not trusted - Corbyn is trusted less *gulps* 2/
But on Boris. Many political commentators will remember when Boris was giving evidence on the cost of the EU when the chair responded saying "This is all very interesting, Boris. Except none of it is really true, is it?” 3/
It's got to the stage where Boris is now doing external comms to suggest "he has never lied". inews.co.uk/news/politics/…

This is a slip towards a Trumpian approach to PR that in leafy Stroud appears to not be going down well. Ppl want a local politician that they can trust.

4/
And back to my former Tory voter. She told me that she no longer trusted the Tories on the environment "all talk and no action".

This is her opinion but it is backed up by experts 5/
.@Greenpeace this week described Tories "continued support for a number of polluting industries, such as aviation, oil and gas, and massive spending commitments for new road-building are at odds with their net-zero target"

independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi… 6/
She also said to me that she wanted to remain in the EU and she didn't like that the Tories were pushing Brexit at all cost.

This is again on the money. Polling suggests that about 1 in 3 Tory Remain voters are looking for a new political home 7/
In #Stroud this is really significant because The Lib Dems (maybe the most natural home for these voters) have stood down for Greens as part of the @unitetoremain alliance. We don't know the numbers but every time I go out I meet Tories who are now voting Green in Stroud 8/
A few people are aware of @MollyMEP's longstanding work on Brexit and were worried how many of those named on her badboysofbrexit.com were now in Boris' government

Who would let Matthew Elliot (the co-founder of the right-wing TaxPayers’ Alliance) into the Treasury? 9/
Last but not least the former Tory now first-time @TheGreenParty vote said: "I looked around and there was no one else I could vote for".

She was left politically homeless and I don't know if she will always vote Green but I know she and many others will this election 10/
There's a strange group of voters behind @MollyMEP (former Tory remain voters, LDs, former Labour who don't like Corbyn, first-time voters and the "soft Green" types).

These are all people who won't vote Con or Lab this election but who might, in big numbers, #VoteMolly 11/
