[Thread] What's in a picture?

TL;DR- Stop being lazy and using Nazi imagery.

@_mcgrail in Oklahoma sent me this image he saw in an ad for @NEWS9, saying how the station used this image in celebration of it having been with Oklahomans "through two World Wars."
There is so much wrong going on here, I'm not sure where to start.

First off, these are German soldiers, not American.

And they are SS.

And this isn't even an historical image. It's a picture of people reenacting the SS (which is another level of cringe.)
I'm not (obviously) implying that @NEWS9 is intentionally endorsing the Nazis.

But this is just sloppy journalism.

The image can easily be found via Google reverse image search.
It's also available on the @GettyImages stock photo site...where it is clearly labored as portraying reenactors and Germans "advancing toward the enemy." 🙄
AND...it is featured in a @welt article about NC state congressional candidate Tim Spear (9 years ago)

welt.de/vermischtes/ar…
Of course, Trump also famously made this same mistake.

And this image still seems to be floating around as an acceptable picture of the "Greatest Generation."

It's here on the website of @IntrepidHeroes (a thoroughly admirable charity helping American soldiers with PTSD).
It's not breaking news that this is just...bad (and lazy).

But, in this era of "both sides" and resurgent white nationalism or people who probably would hang such photos in their houses, organizations need to do some VERY BASIC diligence.
@NEWS9 has over 100k followers so errors like this can resonate a lot.

(note: I don't think they tweeted the image and I'm not sure what their viewing numbers are)
I guess, in the end, if you are looking for WWII "Greatest Generation" images, it's REALLY not hard to find images of the good guys and even actual HISTORICAL photos.

We can do better.
