Technology produces both good & bad outcomes. While social media has led to academics being bullied & mobbed--which is abhorrent--it is also allowing the public to see what passes as scholarship today. So it's promoting transparency. 1/

New PhDs in the humanities are being churned out faster than high school grads can be recruited to enrol. And if enrolments are drying up (which they are) these subjects don't even work as Ponzi schemes anymore.
But as @NickWolfinger reminds me, there are tremendous upsides as well. The ability of researchers/scholars to network and read papers *as soon as they come out* is unprecedented. We've only just begun to see the benefits that this will bring.
