Part II of our latest geolocation quest for @Europol's #StopChildAbuse #TraceAnObject project is out.

And it takes us to Cambodia.

bellingcat.com/news/2019/12/1…
@Europol Geolocation is only the beginning for an investigation like this, but as you read, you will realize just how much effort and time it can take.

The environment, the buildings, the power lines, etc. — everything is taken into consideration, as @Mabl2K breaks down in the article.
@Europol @Mabl2K Then one must find out *when* the image was taken, i.e. chronolocation comes into play.

The leaves on the trees, the changing nearby buildings, the way the light falls, etc. — all factors are carefully considered before making a final verdict.
@Europol @Mabl2K But we don't stop there.

Based on what @Mabl2K uncovered, he offered some advice to the authorities on how to proceed.

After all, we want as many of these people as possible to answer for their crimes.
@Europol @Mabl2K In short, please read @Mabl2K's very painstaking, detailed report.

You will find out more about geolocation, chronolocation AND possible ways for authorities to respond to predators with secrets they thought were long buried.

A Russian vessel was granted clearance by a UN inspection body to call at a Houthi-controlled port in Yemen after surreptitiously exporting grain from occupied Crimea, an investigation by Bellingcat and @lloydslist finds. bellingcat.com/news/2024/07/1…
The bulk carrier, Zafar, concealed its whereabouts in Crimea by switching off its Automated Identification System (AIS) before docking at Sevastopol in mid-May, but its presence there was captured on Planet satellite imagery. This satellite image shows the Zafar at the Avlita grain terminal on May 17, 2024. One compartment is open and appears to be being loaded.
Switching off the AIS, also known as ‘going dark’, has been a common occurrence for ships visiting the Port of Sevastopol since western sanctions were introduced in 2015, and was previously reported on by Bellingcat. bellingcat.com/news/2023/08/2…

Latest: An analysis of open source evidence, as well as multiple missile experts, have pointed to a Russian launched Kh-101 cruise missile being the weapon that struck a children’s hospital in Kyiv bellingcat.com/news/2024/07/0…
The July 8th attack on the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital has left three children dead and 16 injured according to the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU). More are thought to still be under the rubble.
Shortly after the bombing, claims began to surface on social media that Russia was being wrongly blamed for the attack and that the missile was American in origin, fired by Ukraine. @jacksonhinklle, a political activist who has appeared on Russian state media, was one such voice. Screenshot of a tweet by Jackson Hinkle claiming without evidence that the missile that hit the hospital was “an American Patriot air defense missile”. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a similar claim later in the day (Source: X/Twitter)

In our latest documentary, Bellingcat and @scrippsnews used satellite imagery and open source videos and photos to identify dozens of cultural heritage and religious sites that have either been damaged or destroyed in Gaza. bellingcat.com/news/2024/06/2…
The Israel Defense Forces told us there “is no doctrine that aims to cause maximal damage to civilian infrastructure regardless of military necessity,” However some sites examined by @scrippsnews and Bellingcat appear to have been targeted, including cemeteries and mosques.
Famous sites, such as the Al-Omari Mosque in Gaza’s Old City, have been destroyed or greatly damaged, with the destruction visible from satellite imagery. More than half the 150 sites examined by @scrippsnews and Bellingcat would be considered religious sites. This image shows a screenshot from the documentary including a map that depicts all the identified cultural heritage sites, and a picture of the destruction at the Al Omari Mosque.
