I agree with @dhume that it is a product problem because the product offends American hegemonic, neo-colonialists sensibilities in the worst way possible. Something they are not used to since Nehruvians were colonialist’s dream-kids.
West has always been wary of India, esp since the Brits were kicked out. They were relieved when India installed a mentally-colonized person as her first PM. Any politician that talks of India’s self-interest is insufferable to the West because they always prefer a pliable India.
This is why I laugh at Indian analysts who think that India can achieve superpower status without pro-activr demonization and interference from the West. Any Indian leader who shows even an inkling of placing India’s interest above others would be vilified to exemplary levels.
West has a fixed playbook immortalized in their own official records, anyone pretending to not read it is either ignorant or willfully lying.
However, none of these means that we must surrender or ignore all this negative propaganda based on half-truths and morally vacuous grandstanding. Least we can do is mount a solid response on all the international platforms available to us. Western propaganda is the next frontier
PS: The initial lukewarm reaction to Modi was because they misread him. They thought his “development” plank meant he would convert India into an American dream market where they would sell us their wares and their “progressive” ideas furthering the neo-colonialist agenda.
That ofcourse didn’t happen because it was a royal miscalculation perhaps because “analysts” only see what they want to see. Modi’s Gujarat model clearly showed that he has always leaned socialist. Make money & lift the poor has always been his game. So now they’re doubly-pissed.
This is also why Republicans are unlikely to support Hindus/India beyond a point because selling-stuff is America’s one national religion.
Case in point. This was NYT under Republican Nixon
