Did a radio book interview this week in which I pointed out that racism is ubiquitous. Interviewer wanted to make point, “but most of the insurrection oats were from the south.” I asked, “how would you know that?” She said, “because I’ve looked at the arrest records” 1/3
2/3 I was incredulous but couldn’t challenge it in the moment. How I’ve seen real data and can. From a GWU study: the highest number of ppl charged by county were from LA County in Calif, Franklin County in Ohio, and Bucks County in Pa. extremism.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/…
The point I was making was a simple one. We keep holding on the a concept of American racist that not only antiquated but dangerous: that’s its only, or primarily, a southern phenom. No, it’s an EVERYWHERE phenom. Also know this: I will ALWAYS find receipts.
BIG NEWS: The NYT just published this adapted excerpt from my forthcoming book! They titled the excerpt "We Need a Second Great Migration." The title of the book is #TheDevilYouKnow. The excerpt will be the cover of the Sunday Review. So excited... nytimes.com/2021/01/08/opi…
1. Because this is an excerpt, and the entire book is an argument that builds, the excerpt can only capture so much and will likely leave people with question (a good thing). But, let me address a few things in this thread...
2. This for me is not a theory or thought experiment. I believe completely in this plan. I have moved to Atlanta myself.
This is so personally devastating to me: the black male vote for Trump INCREASED from 13% in 2016 to 18% this year. The black female vote for Trump doubled from 4% in 2016 to 8% this year.
Also, once again, exit polls show a majority of white women voting for Trump. (Important note: Pew analysis of actual votes in 2016 showed that it wasn’t a majority but was a plurality.)
Also, the percentage of LGBT voting for Trump doubled from 2016. DOUBLED!!! This is why LGBT people of color don’t really trust the white gays. Yes, I said what I said. Period.
I’m tired of black people being killed in the streets. I’m tired in my damned bones. Don’t talk to me. Just let me sit in this. Words are insuffiecient. Language fails.
You expect criminals to commit crimes, but you don’t expect the state (police) to commit the crimes. It’s so much worse. They have the force of law and the law is ubiquitous. How does one escape or avoid that. I want to SCREAM!
Human beings don’t just suffer quietly, cry under the stair, stiffen their backs and care on. They get ANGRY.
