Noam Shalev event in Sweden:
Friday night, a small restaurant in the heart of Stockholm. I finish eating and ask for an account.
The waitress came over and I handed her my credit card which suddenly dropped and fell to the floor.
She immediately bends over, picks it up and /1
looks at the card. Where are you from? Where are you from? She asks. Israel, I answer and then see that she looks at me with her mouth open, trembling and starting to cry. Within seconds, it disappears, and I hurry to pick up my coat and hat to find the nearest exit, /2
because I'm clear I'm a Jew in a hostile environment. And before I escape to the frozen street, she returns with another girl in cook clothes and points at me, still crying and trembling. I am already in position of quick retreat, but realize that there is no hostility on /3
their part. The waitress asks me for forgiveness, and her sister explains to me that they have never met an Israeli, and all they want is to say thank you. Apparently, they are refugees from Syria, and a few years ago their mother became very ill and was on her deathbed. /4
In the middle of the night, they were taken to the border with Israel, and from there for three weeks in the hospital in Safed. And today the mother is healthy and whole, living with her daughters in the Stockholm suburb. The waitress does not hold back and calls her mother, /5
and I find myself speaking in mixed English and German with an excited and crying woman, who asked me for only one thing: give thanks to all your brothers in Israel, for their right to my daughters to have a mother. /6
So with all the cynicism, our rotten politics and constant anger over a lot of the bad things, I had to travel all the way to Stockholm to feel different.
And on behalf of one Syrian woman, I am grateful to all of us. /7
