The Ultimate Applied Behavioural Science Graduate Programme

If I had ALL the resources in the world (+ social capital, logistics skills, etc) this is the programme team I’d put together.

(Mostly joking/a bit deludedly optimistic that something like this could happen)

I’ve seen the @bermster @evelyngosnell and @RichardMathera in action. They’re absolute rock stars.

Right. Guest speakers. The ultimate programme needs interesting, accessible and articulate guest speakers. Fortunately the field has plenty of these.

I’d rope in @danariely @rorysutherland , @katy_milkman , @jeffkreisler , @m_sendhil , @AnnieDuke and #DavidHalpern.

We need the best BeSci content creators and curators in the business to get the participants cogs turning before the programme.

Workshop material matters! We need super engaging workshop material to facilitate better ideation.

Applying their learnings. Participants need practical project briefs to test their skills in the wild. 🐘

I’d call on @jezgroom @wrmailer @s_tatam @TheEtinosa and @SquarePegMind to help build out a set of realistic briefs for the participants 💪
Then there is the judging. Who is going to evaluate the participants’ work? Let’s break it up into sections:

Ethics - @CassSunstein @R_Thaler obvs and @LiamDelaneyEcon with @Lis_Costa_ in close support

Problem diagnosis - @Peguha and basically anyone from @ideas42 🙌
Judging part 2:

Intervention Design - @bjfogg , @ProfWendyWood @rshotton @danbenyork @mhallsworth and #StevenWendel

Experiment Design - @mike_t_sanders @LinneaGandhi #CurrisCobb @BusaraCenter peeps and someone from @CapitalOne or @amazon
PR. The programme basically sells itself, but a few podcasts interviews couldn’t hurt 🎙

I’d get @erikleejohnson and @zarakstar involved + the @behavioralgroov guys and @NPRinvisibilia ladies.

We’d get @taylorswift13 to drop a tweet for us too ❤️

The lessons I have learnt marketing an independent cohort-based online course.

LESSON 1: START CLOSE TO HOME

Leverage your personal network to get the ball rolling. Then gradually move to your professional network.

Don't aim for the ideal target market if they aren't close by. Feedback and support in getting the course off the ground is key NB initially.
LESSON 2: ARTICULATE THE PROBLEM

Clearly communicate the problem you are trying to help solve.

I spent too much time talking about solutions initially, implicitly assuming the problem was clear.

Spell it out. Understand what language resonates. How people connect with it.

Some context:

I began 2020 with the ambition to build a new kind of development programme.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME:

To provide people with a framework, toolkit and group platform for building behaviourally-informed systems to solve the recurring self-control challenges.
My initial strategy was to start offline with a small local cohort, gather feedback, iterate and then slowly move online.

COVID added a plot twist to that story.

The game changed and I had to learn and adapt quickly.

LESSON 1: GET YOUR COURSE STACK RIGHT

There isn't a platform that meets all my needs as a cohort-based online course creator.

I've looked.. hard. Believe me.

So I use a combination of:

@NotionHQ
@SubstackInc
@PayPal
@YouTube
@zoom_us
@CircleApp
@NotionHQ sits at the core of my course structure.

It's probably the most helpful tool into my stack, yet I see hardly any other course creators using it.

Here's what I find useful:

• Content duplication
• Media agnosticism
• Content customisation
• High-precision feedback
