Dear #AncestryHour friends, I have so many questions. This I found some years ago in my grandmother's possessions. It's made of postage stamps. Finally today I have tried to find out more about it. 1/ What looks like a painting but which is made up of cut posta
On the mount in pencil is written "Doram Sibley, St Just, Penwith, Cornwall". You're going to have to take my word for that because I've only photographed this with my phone so far and it's behind glass. 2/
On the back is written "Fore Street, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall" then "Composed in Postage Stamps by Doram Sibley 1935 (Under the patronage of HM the Queen). 3/ Photograph showing the written words as tweeted.
At first I'd thought it was Penrith but there was no Fore Street, nor a St anything beginning with J. I've found it's in Penzance. I googled and found some finished auctions for similar pictures but no images - it was clear from the descriptions that this was the same artist. 4/
One person had written something about the artist, basically saying she couldn't find out anything about her. She thinks Doram is female so I'm going with that as I've never heard the name before. The pictures seem to be from the 1930s. 5/
When I do an exact search for Doram Sibley I only get 1920s electoral register entries for Kensington/Holland Park/Notting Hill area - all same address over a number of years. She qualified by residence and occupation to vote. Nothing else. Nothing at all. 6/
So apart from who on earth was she? I was intrigued by the queenly patronage when we had a king at the time. It must have been his mother Queen Mary (and this is borne out by one of the auction listings in which she is named). But what did that mean? 7/
I must admit when I first found it and noticed the HM Queen (and before I'd got the magnifying glass out), I'd assumed it was a piece of work created by a prison inmate (like those amazing things made from matches). I don't know where to go with this now. Any thoughts? 8/8. Close up of the picture showing detail of some of the stamps
