So. #BellLetsTalk day. So, let's talk.
Got sad last year. Got down. Got depressed, even. What is it? It's an assassin inside you, speaking to you in your own voice. #BellLetsTalk
The great love your life, the one who makes you hold your breath when he or she steps into a room? Lost one of those. Didn't see it coming. #BellLetsTalk
Lost other stuff, too, because someone had left the back door open, and a snake slipped into the house. It murdered things while they slept. #BellLetsTalk
Worst part isn't necessarily losing the great love (because he/she didn't actually ever love you), or the things (because they're just, you know, things). Was the loss of friends who, seeing the wreckage, step back into the shadows. Leave you. That's the worst. #BellLetsTalk
So. You breathe in sips. You're trapped in a wall, and you can't move your limbs. You realize it's sort of serious, because it actually really really is. The fear feels like cold fingers on your chest, and they're moving towards your neck. #BellLetsTalkDay
So, I can give no better advice than the advice I followed. Five things. #BellLetsTalk
One, it's big. It's bigger than you are. You can't beat it on your own. You just can't. Depression, anxiety, all that: you need to talk to others. Family, friends, professionals. Isolation is the bride of depression. Let's talk? It means doing that. #BellLetsTalkDay
Two, make sure they get it. If they say: "Get over it," it means they totally don't get it. Find, and talk to, someone who takes it seriously and has some experience and will stay with you. #BellLetsTalkDay
Three - and I'm going to sound like your Mom, here - eat right. Exercise. Don't drink, don't abuse drugs, don't take unnecessary risks. And the right amount of sleep? Sleep is the enemy of depression and anxiety. Not too much, though. The regular amount. #BellLetsTalkDay
Four: I call it GEM. Force yourself to live in the moment, and be GRATEFUL for the good things in your life. They're there. Be EMPATHETIC (not sympathetic) to others. Help them. And MINDFULNESS: meditate. Every day. I do, with TM. It works. #BellLetsTalkDay
Five, final: examine your life, make changes. Me, I'm a punk rocker. I'd embraced anger all my life (Strummer: "Let fury have the hour.") I realized, per Freud, anger is depression turned inward. So: not so angry anymore. Made peace. Cooled it. Worked. #BellLetsTalkDay
There's my #BellLetsTalkDay day confession. You give me absolution when you DM me, and tell me you are taking steps - real steps - and that you are going to be okay.
Now, go out into the world. You've got this. We've got your back.
