Hi. Do me a quick favor. Go look at some mountains. Or like, an ocean or something. Done? Cool. Now come back here and consider that the forces which bind together their atoms and the laws of physics which govern their formation, their movements, the interplay of
gravity with the waves, all relate to each other logically, some of them in ways we have yet to understand but all of them in manifest and intricate union like the cogent thoughts of one coherent mind.

Scripture describes this as the mind, and hand, and will,
of God at work. It depicts a person with a consciousness whose very thoughts and acts just *are* the realities which in science we describe as laws. It does so from the perspective of human beings, because its purpose is to describe *what it is like to live* in that world, not
precisely how the movements of that world may be quantified and predicted. But to say that these two modes of description are incompatible with one another is to misunderstand: they are two ways of talking about what, according to our faith, are the behavior and actions
of one almighty being.

Now, Christians say something more about that being, which is that the height and summit of his creative energies on this earth were dedicated to forming the human race. Not the human race in abstract only, but the specific members of the human race that
there are, in reality. Including you. Before he settled the mountains on the earth and with greater care than he numbered the electrons of what we would one day know as the elements of the periodic table, he intended in the core of himself for there to be veins beneath
your skin and neurons in your brain. Leave aside for a moment the fact that you, like nature, sometimes malfunction in ways that can be terribly painful. Only recognize that in your heart of hearts you know it was not *meant* to be so, that your breath and your desires
have a purpose which is higher and more urgent even than the purposes of ozone in the atmosphere or nitrogen in the soil. What is that purpose?

If you set about asking God to help you answer that question you will find that your petty worries and your minor disappointments are
of very little account indeed. You may even find that another of Scripture's old sayings is true: that in seeking to know the will of God which is written into your very physiognomy you are in fact *set free* from the detritus of your failures and the sting of
your anxieties. Maybe in fact you will be given a hope and a future, maybe you will begin to know that you were formed not to be harmed but prospered, and that beyond the horizon of your present suffering there stands a savior brilliant as the dawn, waiting to call you by name.
