I'm proud to have worked with a fantastic group of activists to help develop @BernieSanders's disability policy plan. (1) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders It's an impressively comprehensive document, worth reading in all of its 13,000+ words, but there are a few items I think are particularly worth highlighting: #CripTheVote (2)
@BernieSanders The plan starts with a number of actions the executive branch can take to advance disability rights without relying on Congress. Given the current state of gridlock, that's a big deal. (3)
@BernieSanders That includes unwinding Iowa's disastrous Medicaid Managed Care implementation, reversing the Trump Administration's attacks on Olmstead and requiring states seeking Medicaid demonstration waivers to end their HCBS waiting lists. (4) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders It also includes a strong emphasis on Olmstead enforcement, placing particular emphasis on keeping people with mental illness out of the criminal justice system. (5) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders That's especially important given how candidates often talk about mental illness.

@BernieSanders explicitly promises to oppose proposals to expand involuntary commitment laws or weaken HIPAA and FERPA privacy protections. That's a huge deal. (6) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders The plan also includes an impressive series of proposals regarding Social Security, including eliminating the SSI asset test and raising the SSI benefit level to 125% of the federal poverty level. (7) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders That would be approximately $1,300/month for a single person household, a vast improvement over the existing SSI benefit level of $771. (8) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders The plan also incorporates an innovative new approach to IDEA funding. It makes special education funding mandatory, like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. (9) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders It also offers schools additional funding for each student they include in the general education classroom. The explicit emphasis on inclusion is important, as efforts to include students with intellectual disabilities have stalled in recent years. (10) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders Also in the realm of education policy, it explicitly endorses the Keeping All Students Safe Act, which would ban the use of seclusion and limit restraint to emergency situations. (11) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders Of particular interest to the #ActuallyAutistic community, the plan would increase the percentage of autism research funding allocated to the needs of autistic adults and services. (12) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders It also includes a promise to "center the voices of autistic people in autism policy", a groundbreaking commitment from a Presidential candidate, and includes specific promises to make autistic adults half the public members on the @IACC_Autism. (13) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders @IACC_Autism The plan also includes many fantastic proposals on housing, supported decision-making, parenting rights, climate change and much more. I encourage you to read it in its entirety: berniesanders.com/issues/fightin… (14) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders @IACC_Autism The fact that we're seeing multiple campaigns make disability rights a part of their closing argument to the voters is a very big deal. (15) #CripTheVote
@BernieSanders @IACC_Autism It speaks to the power of #CripTheVote and the larger disability community. We've come a long way!
