(THREAD) How to kill a life-saving public health intervention to the roar of thunderous applause.

The #UCP guidebook to gaslighting, misdirection, and nepotism.
#ABLeg #ABpoli
The @jkenney show was something to behold today—amidst announcements for treatment funding, those of us in #harmreduction waited in bated breath for some indication about the fate of supervised consumption services (SCS) in #Alberta.
While the SCS chatter didn’t start until after the announcements, the government’s continued negative attitude towards the service was in full force.

‘Those addictions counsellors, they’re the real heroes’

‘Those of you who got clean and stayed clean, you’re the real heroes’
No mention of the tireless efforts of harm reduction workers. Nothing!

They even re-labelled Canada’s four pillar opioid strategy to remove harm reduction. The new pillars are:

Treatment
Prevention
Enforcement
And...
Intervention?

It’s lazy and shallow

It’s no doubt that @jkenney has a biased view towards addictions treatment; need we bring up the unethical and unscientific practices of his family?

infotel.ca/newsitem/owner…
But at long last, the media got their questions in. When pressed on the issue of SCS funding, @jkenney showed his cards by stating ‘there’s a lot of research against supervised consumption’.

Before diving into the evidence, let’s clear the air. That’s a bold-faced lie.
And before the $240k government troll @MattWolfAB penetrates my DMs, the transcripts of the media scrum showed those were not the premier’s exact words.

His exact words were actually much worse!
@jkenney and @jasonluan88 are clearly adverse to evidence and legal precedence.

Harper’s federal conservatives did everything in their power to stop Canada’s first SCS, @InsiteVan.

In 2011, the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously sided with the sites.

This means there is historic precedence at Canada’s highest level of courts ordering a federal government to not impede the work of SCS.

Laws have never really stopped these guys though, have they?
According to the transcripts provided by resident twitter tough guy Matt Wolf, Kenney says there is an enormous amount of evidence in this report outlining negative impacts.

Such profound evidence that even Health Canada hasn’t been permitted to see it?

Those of us who spend their time reviewing ‘the evidence’ will be quick to point out, the enormity is in favour of these services.

I give you exhibit A: three robust, systematic reviews supporting SCS.

ir.lib.uwo.ca/sociologypub/4…

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/28875…

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25456…
If you aren’t familiar, these reviews are constituted among the highest levels of evidence for public health interventions. They synthesize the findings from high quality, peer reviewed studies.

And what does the evidence show?
“High-quality scientific evidence suggests that these effectively achieve their primary public health and order objectives with a lack of adverse impacts”

🤯🤯🤯
“SIS were found to provide numerous benefits to PWID [people who inject drugs]”

“Moreover, SIS generate public benefits such as a decrease in the number of PWID injecting in public and a reduction of dropped syringes in public places”

🤔🤭🤫
“Evidence thus far is tilted towards supporting the view of these sites as producing favourable outcomes for not only IDUs [injection drug users], but also for potentially enhancing the well-being of the local community”

No kidding?
So, if the studies that review hundreds of other studies irrefutably support SCS, what evidence is the #UCP using?

Could it be the anecdotal study Premier Kenney flaunted last week?

The one that even the author stated, was taken out of context and used in inflammatory means?
Back to the media transcripts, observe how @jkenney removes any accountability on his part.

‘We don’t open or close the sites, we are just the primary funder.’

Yeah, and how do sites stay open after you defund them?
So how do you kill a life-saving public health service?

1. Gaslight the service/provider
2. Ignore positive news relating to the service
3. Appoint a panel to make hard choices
4. Create echo chambers and reward your friends
5. Attack. The. Evidence.

Lastly, this strategy is being used on many #Albertans.

If you are on #AISH
If you are a teacher
If you are a nurse
If you use drugs
If you are a senior in need of meds

You are all less important than a $30 million oil war room that can’t even make its own logo.

Solidarity.
