1. A traditional kerala hindu wedding is observed in a temple or nearby the residence of the bride.
2. The Nischayam Ceremony :

This ritual is performed to share & celebrate the joyful announcement of the marriage. This ceremony is otherwise, called a ring engagement where both the bride and groom exchange rings marking the start of their relationship.
3. Pre-Nuptial blessing for the bride

This is a very important wedding ritual which takes place one day prior to the wedding, at the residence of the bride. This ceremony is observed to perform the blessings from her elders for which she is made to sit facing the east.
Eastern direction is considered to be a holy direction. The elders then shower their blessings for a happy and prosperous wedding life.
The same is performed at the groom’s house as well.
4. Mehendi Ceremony :

This ceremony takes place at the bride’s house. This is a very joyful & fun-filled ceremony with music & dancing going all around.
The aunts of the bride apply mylanchi /henna on the hands of the bride.
Thiruvathira dance is also arranged now a days.
5.Dakshina Kodukkal :

This custom is performed just before leaving their respective homes for the wedding venue by the bride and groom. Both of them touch the feet of their parents & elder siblings in their families& seek their blessings before they start their new lives.
6. The kalyana mandap should be decorated in a specific way. The sacred arrangements should be arranged with special care, as each of these has certain meanings in the Hindu custom.
7. Kanyadaan

The bridegroom is welcomed to the wedding venue by the bride’s family. The bride’s brother washes the groom’s legs and invites him to the venue. The bridegroom is usually escorted in a ceremonious manner to the kalyana mantapa by a group of girls carrying diyas.
8. Groom made to sit in a wooden plank on the right side of the canopy. The bride is escorted by her father, mother & aunt to the mantapam, and made to sit next to the groom, even as the ‘nadaswaram’ is being played in the background.
9. Thalikettu
Bride is made to sit on the left of the groom. As the muhurtam approaches, the groom ties the sacred ‘thali’ /mangalsutra around the neck of the bride. Drums are played when the groom ties the holy yellow thread.
10. Pudamuri
There is also a ritual that the groom has to gift a saree/2 to the bride at this moment. This ritual is known as pudamuri. The mother-in-law of the bride also ties a chain to the bride’s neck and this symbolizes that he has accepted her as her daughter-in-law.
11. Kanyadan
After garlands r exchanged between the couple, the bride’s father places the bride’s right hand into the groom’s right hand, signifying that he is handing his daughter to the groom. After holding hands, the couple goes around the holy fire three times.
12. Thaali /mangalsutra
This is the normal one we wear. (pattern changes according to region & caste)
13. Marriage feast

This is followed by the grand meal, also known as sadhya. The meal consists of 12/15 items and is served on a plaintain leaf. All the items are traditional vegetarian dishes.
14. Post wedding ceremony:
Grihapravesham
At the perfect auspicious moment, the groom takes the bride to his home. On reaching home, the bride holds a traditional brass lamp in her hand and walks into the house putting her right foot in first.
