There is a data supply thread going around with experts dunking on people who believe microphones are listening to them & using their conversations to show targeted ads.

Experts claim it’s impossible, but they are wrong...and numerous companies have tech to do it. Thread time..
Numerous companies have been testing this Speech->Keyword->Ad Segments for over a decade. I’m sharing 14 patents from major companies that do *exactly this*

Sony submitted for a patent for Speech to Keyword to Advertising tech in 2007 (received in 2011) @ patents.google.com/patent/US20080…
AT&T submitted for a patent for Speech to Keyword to Advertising tech in 2008 (received in 2015) @ patents.google.com/patent/US90150…
Nuance Communications submitted for a patent for Conversational Speech to Keyword to Advertising Segments tech in 2012 (received in 2017) @ patents.google.com/patent/US20140…
Nuance had a similar patent submitted in 2007 and received in 2010 for “System and method for selecting and presenting advertisements based on natural language processing of voice-based input” patents.google.com/patent/US78181…
Google submitted for a patent in 2008 (received in 2012) for “Advertising based on environmental conditions” which specifically mentioned using the mobile microphone “environmental data” for advertisements. patents.google.com/patent/US81389…
Google has a patent they received in 2012 for “Device, system and method for providing targeted advertisements and content based on user speech data” - it has an If/Then switch for device Commands OR adding new keywords to user profiles based on speech..
patents.google.com/patent/US83409…
Amazon submitted for a patent in 2011 (received 2015) for “Keyword determinations from voice data” for “targeted advertising and product recommendations” using “sniffer algorithms or processes can attempt to identify trigger words in the voice content” @ patents.google.com/patent/US20140…
Qualcomm submitted for a patent in 2013 (received in 2017) for “Interleaving advertising packets for improved detectability and security” which specifically mentions using microphones as a source of environmental sensor data. patents.google.com/patent/EP30476…
Empire Technologies submitted for a patent in 2014 (received in 2017) for “Identification by sound data” that specifically mentioned syncing with a social network to parse a user’s identity when a proper name was heard over a microphone @ patents.google.com/patent/US97862…
Nielsen + Citibank assigned/submitted patents from 2010-2015 for “Dynamic ad selection for ad delivery systems” described as making it possible for “topic of conversation and/or other information which may be useful in selecting targeted advertisements” patents.google.com/patent/US20120…
Cisco submitted for a patent in 2013 (received in 2017) for “Context aware geo-targeted advertisement in a communication session” which is clearly Speech to Keywords to Ads tech @ patents.google.com/patent/US98009…
Facebook submitted for a patent in 2012 (received in 2012) for “Advertising Based on Customized User Dictionary” which specifically mentions that it includes any I/O devices including microphones @ patents.google.com/patent/US20130…
Microsoft submitted for a patent in 2013 (received in 2014) for “Contextual mobile application advertisements” which specifically mentions microphones and audio data as a source of their speech->keyword-> ads targeting @ patents.google.com/patent/US20140…
Microsoft also has a patent submitted in 2006 (received in 2006) for “Public Display Network For Online Advertising” which matches advertising content to audiences in physical locations, mentions microphone sensors as I/O data @ patents.google.com/patent/US20080…
Final tweet of the thread... Apple bought Lattice Data for $200 million to help w/ Dark Audio Metadata Categorization - I wrote about Google’s Artificial Intelligence Director leaving for Apple in 2018 that gets into this work: medium.com/@thezedwards/w…

Audio metadata = huge $$$
One of my FAV examples of this is Facebook's Wit.ai - FB owns this speech to keyword to segment technology but Wit.ai & FB basically hides FB's ownership.

Furthermore, FB limits internal NLP fields, pushes to Wit... & Wit TOS gets your data.😑
FB's NLP docs link to Wit.ai w/ details developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger…

WitAI is used by over 200k devs... a lot of speech data!

WitAI TOS has ZERO mentions of Facebook @ wit.ai/terms#8

User-submitted audio data privacy is complicated but needs more 👀
New study on wake words & IOT w/ microphones should make everyone 👀 -average recording time for false wake words were 20-43 seconds // The Office was one of the TV shows triggering the most false positive wake words @ moniotrlab.ccis.neu.edu/smart-speakers… // none found to “constantly record”
Another day, another microphone exploit that we have to hope/trust wasn’t actually used in the wild... (very interesting research that hopefully gets additional close looks for replication) 👀🤖🥶
Nebraska Attorney General @AGDougPeterson spoke at the June 12, 2019 Roundtable w/ State AG's on Federal Consumer Protection & Competition.

Peterson spoke about a 20-inch doll for kids w/ a catch phrase "Let's Party"

**IOT audio recording is real**

@AGDougPeterson Flashback to 2017: "Mattel cancels AI babysitter after privacy complaints - The Aristotle was an AI assistant that would sing lullabies to babies and teach them their ABCs" theverge.com/2017/10/5/1643…

Good report from Commercial Free Childhood on this @ (commercialfreechildhood.org/wp-content/upl…)
@AGDougPeterson "Hey Google, that wasn't for you"

very reassuring! 😅
I'm sure Facebook's Wit.Ai NLP API (Speech to Keyword to Segment/Optimizations) product, which has the option to analyze **Uighur** speech & many other languages, is nothing anyone should worry about.

Sure would be nice for Facebook to admit they own this....
