On the bus earlier a small child asked “what’s that?” (meaning my white cane).

What the parent did next horrified me.

Parent: shush!
Kid: but what is it?
Parent: shush! When I tell you to shush! You’re quiet! Don’t talk.
Me: don’t do that! They’re just asking a question! 😡

Parent: sorry.
Me: they’re just trying to learn! Just explain it to them. It’s not a bad thing.
Parent: sorry yeah.
Me: Just explain I’m blind, it won’t make me explode. Don’t shush them, don’t make them scared of me.
Parent: sorry yes, ok.

Sadly I never heard them explain ☹️ 2/
Never do this. Never tell off your child for asking a simple question about disability.

Just explain in clear language that everyone is different, people have different bodies & that’s great!

Please don’t make disability something scary, don’t turn us into an unspoken taboo. 3/
Disability isn’t shameful or rude, it’s just part of the beautiful diversity of the world.

Help your children understand disability instead of fearing it.

All the parent needed to say was “that lady has a special stick because she can’t see well, it helps her find things” 4/
I’ve written about the funny curious joyful things children say when they encounter the lady with the white stick.

I would rather hear a question answered than a shush every time! 5/5
