I am still thinking about that #BBCQT woman.
She wanted to know how much "interpretation services" are costing the #NHS.
So here is the answer. /thread
The #NHS in England doesn't collect the data, and last time this was asked was 2010/11 with 80% of trusts in England responding to an FOI. The final figure was a guesstimate of £23.3m for the entire NHS or 0.02% of the budget. /1

So, as interpretation services are needed by a specific person, how much can we extrapolate that adds to each individual consultation cost?
Firstly, in today's numbers, 0.02% of the current NHS budget in England (£132bn) is £26.4 million. /2
And if we total up:
20,000,000 hospital inpatient consultations (nested)
123,000,000 outpatient consultations
25,000,000 A&E consultations

=168,000,000 annual consultations in NHS England / 3
So.
The cost of an available interpreter for a patient in a hospital is

£26,400,000 /
168,000,000

=15p per consultation / 4
Just to summarise:

It costs NHS hospitals an EXTRA 15 PENCE for every consultation to provide interpretation services.

We also provide limited interpretation for free all the time, through staff banks. Or my pig Spanish. Anyway. / 5
What about these "signs in other languages"?

Well, firstly, it's unclear which hospital she was in.
She lives in Weymouth (apparently) and was seen in a hospital in London (apparently) which is around a 9-hour round-trip. / 6
For the actual hospital corridor signs, in all London trusts I ever worked they were just in English:

Wexham
Chelsea West.
West Mid.
Kings
UCH
Queens Square
The Royal Free
Royal London
Whipps Cross
Newham
Barts'
Princess Alexandra
Luton
Watford
Northwick Park
St Pancras /7
I'm not sure how much it would cost to translate all the signs in a hospital, although I'm not sure what language you would usefully translate that too.
Happy to hear some suggestions on this.
Also, there are apps now that can do this for free, so it's slightly redundant. / 8
It's a shame we can't have a debate where it's reasonable to stop and look up the answer, and then talk about it.
That's how you'd do it in a meeting, or any other sensible grown-up discussion.
Maybe we can save this for next time. Sadly, I'm sure there will be one. /f
