Government-supported mobs will clash with democratic, non-violent anti-CAA protestors. This will be spun as “CAA protests turn violent”. Such violence shall then be used to clamp down on all anti-CAA protests, delegitimise them.
CJI Bobde will say he won’t listen to violent protestors. Hate-mongering misinformation machines will say jihad, jihad. The path to making millions stateless is laden through diabolical spin-doctoring, misinformation, manufacturing a fake consensus.
The only reason why this hasn’t happened so far (outside UP, maybe Karnataka) is because BJP thought it would benefit from protesting Muslims, using them to manufacture ‘Hindus threatened’ narrative. For example:
m.timesofindia.com/india/shaheen-…
But this has not been working. By making Shaheen Bagh an issue the BJP won just 8 of 70 seats in Delhi elections for instance. Maybe they would have won 0 without Shaheen Bagh but point is that Shaheen Bagh could not even deliver 1/7th the seats. Vote share improvement marginal.
The government clearing peaceful, women-led, democratic protests will be bad optics. That would repeat the Jamia library kind of mistake. Hence the “pro and anti CAA protestors clash” narrative will likely be used to shut down dissent. Anytime now.
There hasn’t been a time since the Emergency when it’s been so very important to speak up and speak out for democracy, for satyagraha, for non-violence and truth. History won’t forgive our silence. History won’t forgive your silence.
It is important that Shaheen Bagh and similar protests across India make loud calls for non-violence, so that when violence knocks to discredit them everyone knows who lit the fire.
As I had suspected, the violence was basically orchestrated to clear a peaceful protest site. This model likely to be used soon in every protest site including Shaheen Bagh.
