I know a ton of us are #workingremotely right now. I'm sending 🤗to you all as we navigate these scary times with #coronavirus.

I wanted to share some "Video Meeting Basics" in case you're new to working remotely or doing video calls.

(thread ...)
1) Use "whole body listening". Use your eyes, ears and posture to show you're listening.

#workingfromhome
2) If you're typing, explain why at the beginning of the meeting by saying "I want everyone to know I'm actively listening. If you see me typing, it's because I'm taking notes."

#remoteworking
3) Turn on your camera. If you don't, people will assume that you're not listening. You can't use the excuse of "my camera isn't working" or "my room is messy". You wouldn't do an in-person meeting with a bag over your head, so don't conduct video calls that way.

#remotework
4) Embrace the fact that your kids, dogs and partners make noise and walk through the frame. We're now living in a world where most people value authenticity over being "professional".
5) Do not, no matter how badly you're tempted, start doing things on your phone. It's rude in person and it's rude on a video call.
6) Do not mute and then start a conversation with others in the room. If you need to do this, apologize and explain why to the other participants.
7) Use headphones and mute when you're not speaking.

#videocalls
8) If some of you are together in a room physically and others are joining via video, be very aware that people on video are going to feel less included. Use a hand-raise protocol before speaking so that everyone has a chance to contribute to the discussion.
