NY courts are essentially closing to public starting Monday. Essential functions only:
*In felony cases where a defendant is NOT in custody, everything adjourned for now
*In felony cases where defendant is in custody, all hearings by video if possible.
*Arraignments by video if possible
*Family court allows child protection hearings, juvy delinquency proceedings, support orders
Also, and this is a big one:
All eviction proceedings and pending eviction orders are suspended statewide until further notice.

New: Following the new dictates of the coronavirus-era, a bail hearing for Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico's former top cop accused of taking bribes from the Sinaloa cartel, is now taking place by teleconference.
Last week, Garcia Luna asked to be released from the Brooklyn federal jail where at least one case of COVID19 has been detected. Yesterday, prosecutors opposed his release saying he was not at risk for the disease but was a risk to flee the US to Mexico if set free.
The two sides are now arguing about how hard it would be for GGL to escape by car to Mexico. Defense is saying it would take him more than a day to drive down to Laredo and the border's closed anyhow.
Prosecutors are warning he could cut off his ankle monitor and disappear...

R. Kelly joins the growing list of federal inmates trying to get out of jail because of the coronavirus.
"The health risk to Mr. Kelly, b/c of his age &
b/c of the multiple surgeries he has undergone, including a surgery while incarcerated...necessitates his temporary release."
NEW: Brooklyn federal prosecutors now oppose R. Kelly's request to get out of jail in Chicago b/c of Covid19. Echoing similar letters in other cases, prosecutors say that Kelly has "access to soap & cleaning supplies at no cost." They add that there are no cases in Chicago jail.
This is a trend happening around the country as described here by colleagues @WRashbaum @BenWeiserNYT

NEW: Genaro Garcia Luna, the ex-Mexican security official accused of taking bribes from the Sinaloa cartel, joins the growing list of inmates asking for release from jail b/c of COVID19.
There is at least 1 case of infection at the Brooklyn federal jail where he is being housed.
NEW: Brooklyn prosecutors oppose the request of Genaro Garcia Luna to get out of jail b/c of COVID19. Garcia Luna, Mexico's former top cop accused of taking millions from the Sinaloa cartel, asked to be released 5 days ago. Govt said today the virus wasn't enough to free him.
Prosecutors say that even though there's at least one case of COVID19 in the Brooklyn federal jail, GGL has "access to hot water and soap" and like other inmates can "self-seclude" by remaining in his cell.
