Imperial College report: "There is no easy policy choice. [The alternative to the govt's plan] carries enormous social and economic costs which may have significant impact on health...and mortality might still be high."

The media: The govt got its whole plan totally wrong.
Imperial College report: "[The govt's strategy] might reduce peak healthcare demand by two thirds and deaths by 50%.]"

The media: The Government is not taking any action.
Imperial College report: "[The alternative to the govt's plan] will take 18 months or more. It might not protect those in the risk categories. Social and economic costs will be enormous."

The media: The govt got its strategy fundamentally wrong.
Imperial College report: "School and universities closures may have negative impacts on health systems."

The media, Rory Steward, Nigel Farage, Piers Morgan: The govt's stance on school closures is dreadful. When will they take action and close them?
Imperial College report: "Infectioness profile over time results in a 6.5 days mean generation time."

The media and the Twitter comentariat: "The govt is wrong to ask us to isolate for just 7 days. We should isolate for 14!"
Imperial College report: "Baseline assumption is that one person infects 2.4 other persons, with symptomatic individuals 50% more infectious."

The media and the Twitter commentariat: "Not banning mass gatherings will give the disease to everyone."
Imperial College report: "Re-infection with the same strain of seasonal coronavirus is highly unlikely."

The Twitter commentariat: No such thing as immunity for COVID-19. We can all get re-infected. The govt's plan is never going to work because of this.
Imperial College report: "Infection extending at an exponentially growing rate, with a doubling time of 5 days."

Donald Trump, two days ago: There are so few infected people and so few deaths. It's not such a big thing. We'll be fine. Better than ever actually.
Imperial College report: "Airport screenings failed to identify 50% of cases."

The media and the Twitter commentariat, early last week: Why isn't the government doing airport screenings? They are vital!

The media: It's reckless not to close schools.
Imperial College report: 14 days whole home quarantine will likely ensure compliance of just 50% of households. The longer the measures implemented, the lower the compliance.

The media: Why didn't the govt bring these measures sooner?
Imperial College report: "Introducing mitigation measures too early risks allowing transmission to return once they are lifted if insufficient herd immunity has developed."

The media and the Twitter commentariat: Why isn't the government doing more faster? Do they not care?
Imperial College report: "Stopping mass gatherings is predicted to have little impact due to short contact-time."

The media and the Twitter commentariat: Why is the government not stopping mass gatherings? Why don't they listen to the facts?
Imperial College report: "Once hard suppression measures are relaxed, infections will rise, resulting in a second outbreak in November. The better the suppression, the larger the second epidemic due to less herd immunity."

The Media:The govt should obviously be doing more now.
Imperial College report: "Supression social distancing measures and school closures will need to be in force for the majority of 2 years."

The Media and Twitter commentariat: Schools closures and social distancing of entire population are obvious measures to be impelemted now.
Imperial College report: "China obtained case isolation by hospitalisation of all cases, not just those requiring hospitalisation."

Political pundits: Why can't we follow China's example?
Imperial College report: "If supression policies are not maintained until large stocks of vaccine are available (18+ months), transmission will rebound and it will be as no measures were ever implemented."

The media: Surely what the government needs to do now is obvious.
Imperial College report:"There is no certainty that supression will succed. There is no precedent for such a public health intervention. Social & economical effects would be extreme. It's unclear how society would react"

The media: The govt obviously got its whole strategy wrong
