Theme for today: snack

It’s friday so I decided to keep the theme a little lighter

Draw a snack that you like. Das it.

Oh, and give thanks for all of the efforts that go into the creation and availability of said snack

While we are talking about food... If you’re in a position to be able to help others monetarily during this time, reminder to take a moment to find local efforts you can help out with. And thank you if you’ve already done this.
I miss these so much🍙🍙🍙 Image

The Art of Not Problem Solving

Wrote this a year ago, was too scared to let many people see it then. Still scared now, but sharing anyway in the hopes that somebody out there enjoys it✨

so wild looking back at the date stamp of feb 21, 2020, which is one year and an entirely different reality ago
If you read the writing and are wanting to learn more about the buried history I refer to, it turns out a whole book has since been written. Learn more here:

it’s 1am and i’m up because something is bothering me

i heard this app is good for ranting, so here’s a rant

it’s about anti-racism, inclusion, equity, and the gaps between:

- intellectualizing and embodying
- thinking and doing
- intention and impact

BIG gaps
i know a lot of people began a learning journey about this topic this past summer. great. better late than never. welcome.

here’s the thing: there’s a big gap between *intellectualizing* something and *embodying* it
you can read about

playing music
playing sports
acting
dancing

all you want. it doesn’t mean you’re gonna be worth shit when you get out in the field or pick up the instrument or walk out on the stage

inclusion is like that. you have to get it into your body

Also noticed people in New York feel this way about people in California

I’m so grateful I have a partially Dutch (most direct) partially Indonesian (least direct) upbringing to help me straddle all these worlds
Interestingly: the Dutch are the tallest people in the world on average, and Indonesians are the shortest people in the world on average 🤔
I think about this in the colonial context all the time. What was that first encounter like? The Dutch must have looked like aliens, untouched by sunlight and gravity.

I look at portfolios and then vet difficult-to-teach aspects of the person, work with recruiting partners to do the same

I’m not “most” hiring managers but at least one counterpoint
It's also good to maintain the perspective that people are making mental calculations about the support they'll need to provide for somebody against the ambient dysfunction that exists inside the org… and that's real
Managers are often unsupported, execs even less supported, and everyone in charge is trying to navigate the org against the blustering winds of the market and the economy. Doesn't excuse things but at least offers some empathy
