The stimulus package that just passed the Senate has a bailout for Gig Companies.

It provides federal unemployment insurance to ppl who are "self-employed" if they exhaust state remedies--meaning, if the state they live in determines that... 1/

they are not employees, & therefore ineligible for state unemployment insurance. In these scenarios, the federal gov't will provide unemployment insurance to the workers.

This incentivizes states to determine that gig workers are NOT employees, so... 2/
the state does not have to foot the bill. If states found gig workers to be employees, they would have to foot the entire bill, and go after the gig companies later to be reimbursed.

By getting money from the feds, states can avoid this process. And...3/
Gig companies get out from the billions of dollars they owe states for refusing to pay into unemployment insurance funds.

In states like CA, Mass, & NY, where the law is clear, this shouldn't be a problem. But in most states, it will result in bad precedent--4/
Preventing gig workers from having access to unemployment insurance in the future.

It will also take much longer for the gig workers to get the unemployment insurance that they badly need b/c they have to exhaust state remedies first. 5/
The gig companies got what they wanted out of this stimulus. And workers will lose in the long run. END.
One more thing, if you don’t believe me, go to Uber’s CEO’s twitter account and see him lauding the bill’s passage in the Senate. There’s a reason he’s so excited .
An amendment: the "exhaust" language" referenced in the 1st tweet of the thread does not mean they have to exhaust remedies-it means they have to run out of regular benefits. But this remains a big bailout for gig companies who will not be forced to reimburse the feds.
