Remember the Space Race? When the US & the Soviets competed with each other to get to the moon first?

The race to beat coronavirus should be seen in the same way. Beating the virus & keeping the national death rate low should be seen in the same way. 1/
The Space Race was of course about symbolism & ideology but it was also about national security—ballistic missiles. The first nation to the moon won the propaganda war. Yet the propaganda war also tracked military capability. 2/
When the pandemic is over, the nations which manage to keep their death rates low will be the winners of the propaganda war.

Yet this will also reflect their capacity to deal with bioterrorism. 3/
I worry that Western countries are already losing. Am hoping for tech breakthroughs that will win the day.

But if the US doesn’t win this race (if it can’t keep it’s death toll below China’s), will it mark the end of the American Century?
This is why it’s so distressing to see American conservatives talk about sacrificing those at risk “for the economy”. It’s a posture of submission allowing other powers to assert their dominance. /End.
