I don’t think that people have internalized this fact, so it bears repeating: our optimistic projections for #CoronavirusUSA are that the pandemic kills as many Americans as WWII.

The pessimistic? 5 times that.

We’ll likely fall somewhere in the middle.

(thread)
So over the next few months, we are going to see horror and heartache not experienced in the US since the 1918 Spanish Flu. But the number of fatalities will almost surely be much greater than that epidemic, barring a true miracle.
And our corrupt leaders are not going to weasel out of responsibility. As my friends have pointed out, this is our Chernobyl — the arrogance has finally been exposed. The world will not forget.

A million dead Americans will echo through history like the roar of a cannon.
Oh, and the pessimistic projection is *two million dead*.

This is going to touch everyone in some way. A friend, a relative, a co-worker.

And no amount of patriotic posturing on the part of this President will heal those wounds.
This isn’t blowing over by Easter. The war has only begun — we’re in the midst of what is effectively an alien invasion, fighting a fierce, mysterious enemy that has no logic but its own. And it doesn’t obey the honorable rules of battle. We are ALL combatants, now.
It’s one thing when Americans die in combat “over there” — out of sight, out of mind. It’s quite another when it’s overtaking our cities, turning everyday life into a fight for survival. When the deaths begin to mount, Americans will no longer be able to look away.
And there will be a reckoning. Because Americans were taught that we were invincible; that we were the best, that we could crush any enemy. We landed on the moon! We built the bomb!

The pride we’ve enjoyed since WWII is about to come to an end.

There is no turning back.
There will be life after COVID-19. Humanity will prevail, even at great cost. We are the crown jewel of this planet; as compassionate as we are ingenious. For all our faults, we have the power to adapt and overcome. This virus will choke in our mighty hands.
But America will be shaken, and ashamed.

As Solomon warned, pride comes before a fall.

And I just felt the drop in my stomach.

END.
