The pandemic we are living through is unprecedented in the combination of how global its effects are, and our interconnectedness.

I am loath, in such times, to critique the post-logic thinking that has invaded our culture.

But this is egregious. (thread)

“Reproductive labor [is] so gendered,” the article moans. Uh, yes. Gender is the behavioral manifestation of sexual reproduction. Ipso facto.

Guess what else is “gendered”? Who is mostly likely to get sick and die from COVID-19. Men. 2/
The article calls for an end to the family. It cites “patriarchal parenting” as one reason. Much of my past research has been on the evolution of parental care and social systems, and I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. 3/
The article also cites the “fundamentally unsafe space that is private property.” I also studied the evolution of territoriality, & let me tell you: A home worth defending inherently excludes some (for whom it is therefore unsafe?), but it is the center, the hearth, the core. 4/
There are legitimate concerns raised here: Some people are stuck in homes in which domestic abuse is a daily reality. Some people have no homes at all. Such people have real, additional barriers to “sheltering in place” in order to combat SARS-CoV2. 5/
The fact that gov't-imposed lockdowns are particularly burdensome or dangerous for a small minority means that:

-Those people so affected should be receiving additional, special treatment.
-The rest of us should be doing everything we can to not require any special treatment. 6/
“We deserve better than the family. And the time of corona is an excellent time to practice abolishing it,” the article asserts.

Remember in Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide, the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet Ship B?

To the insurance salesmen & PR execs on Golgafrincham Ark Fleet Ship B, who got duped into leaving their home planet so that everyone else could be free from their inane, banal, or destructive “contributions,” let us add those who argue that we should abolish the family. /end
