UK refuses EU request for Belfast office via @RTENewsNow rte.ie/news/ireland/2…
Here’s a response from @EU_Commission to last night’s @rtenews report:
“We can confirm that we have sent letters to the UK regarding a proposal to open a technical office in Belfast with specific technical capabilities to ensure the implementation of the Protocol on Ireland/NI..
...(as set out in Article 12 of the Withdrawal Agreement). This issue was raised in the Joint Committee on Monday. We remain in contact with the UK on this point.”

Ireland’s economy will contract by 8pc in 2020 and expand again by 6pc in 2021 as the coronavirus pandemic takes its toll, according to the European Commission’s latest economic forecast.
1/ The economic uncertainty has been compounded by “specific” Irish factors such as Brexit and changes in international taxation, the outlook says.
2/ Overall Ireland’s unemployment, deficit and debt levels will rise, but there are some consolations, such as the performance of the Irish pharameuctical and medical sectors.

So, some interesting developments on the controversy over the EU's request for an office in Belfast, which has now been twice rejected by the UK
1/ On February 12 @HelgaSchmid_EU, the sec gen of the EU's diplomatic service (EEAS), wrote to her counterpart Sir Simon McDonald, perm sec of the Foreign Office, asking for an EU presence in Northern Ireland after the transition period ends on December 31
2/ Schmid said Article 12 of the Irish Protocol in the Withdrawal Agreement provided for EU customs and veterinary officials to oversee checks and controls on goods moving GB-NI. Therefore they needed an office in Belfast to work out of.

Here is a UK official response to the EU technical note on implementing the NI Protocol:

“The European Commission has chosen to publish this technical note to set out its own views on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
“It was not shared at recent meetings with the UK, nor has it been agreed by the UK Government.

“We are committed to complying with our legal obligations under the Protocol, just as we expect the European Union to comply with theirs.
“We will continue to take forward discussions on the implementation of the Protocol in the Joint Committee and Specialised Committee.”
