Dani Nash @UQ_News asked us—
@NikSteffens @sarahvivbentley & I—to generate evidence-based tips for leaders in these challenging times

Her article is here: habs.uq.edu.au/article/2020/0…

The 5 points we came up with are reproduced below, together with links to supporting evidence

1/
1. READY yourself and your group for shared challenges. The key asset in your group is the group itself—and an associated sense that “we are all this together”. This provides a platform for morale and citizenship, as well as for support and resilience.

2/
2. REFLECT on the circumstances of the people in your groups. Do not make assumptions about the difficulties they are facing or about the forms of support they need. Connect and take the time to find out about group members’ situation and needs.

3/
3. REPRESENT what is important for your group to others. Work with group members to identify key challenges and reasonable goals for the future and communicate these to those who need to know about them. Make these goals a focus for your own endeavour.

4/
4. REALISE your group’s strengths and be aware of its limitations. Work flexibly and creatively with group members to develop strategies and structures that will help you work together to achieve your shared goals.

5/
5. REPORT back to your group on progress. Set time aside to connect and to update members on things they care about. Focus on the progress that has been made towards the group’s goals, but also identify key challenges that remain to be resolved.

As a leader your main priority is to look after, and out for, the group you lead. Wherever possible, create opportunities for group members to connect with each other—especially those on the periphery. Above all else, make sure that we really are “all in this together”
