n So the promised note on Police Brutality vs Good Policing. First let’s understand some criminal psychology. One of the main motivators of crime is that you can get away with it. criminals don’t mind short term setback as long as they “win” in the end
n That’s why police brutality doesn’t actually create any deterrence, but provides enormous fodder for victimhood & persecution stories (we’ve got enough fuelled by the Rana Mayyub already). Simple example is the 3rd intifada, where Israeli police deliberately moved away from
n brutal 2nd intifada tactics. They installed cameras to show the shooting of terrorists if they tried to stab Israelis. These would be sent on Arab twitter/watsapp, to thwart any “they shot and innocent man” stories. But they also ensured shooting wasn’t the 1st response
n the response was remarkable. On one hand the victimhood stories dropped. Why? Because turns out most of the terrorists were cowards. They saw a way out & would inform Israeli guards they’d have to stab them. The Israelis would play along and subdue the guy. Send him to jail
n for attempted terrorism, th would make the guy a hero, he’d get his payout from the Palestinian Authority (yes like india Spain protesters these guys are paid to stab) and he’d get the gratitude of Israelis and feel grateful to them in return. Understand what happened?
n the lack of brutality, but a clear carrot & stick (come to us and we’ll ensure a win-win) gives confidence to these guys to hand themselves over to police. Net result brutality never deterred anyone - except those who wanted to snitch. Then come to deterrence. House demolition
n The moment a suicide attack takes place in israel, the first Israeli action is to go demolish the terrorists house. Terrorists get mega-bucks from the PA to blow themselves up or kill Israelis & their house is rapidly rebuilt. The Israelis keep demolishing these rebuilt houses
n what does this do? It terrifies not the actual bomber/attacker but his family. 70-90% of thwarted attacks are because the family snitched on their own to avoid house demolition. See a pattern here? So far excellent policing without any need for excessive violence
n Deterrence doesnt lie in beating, though house demolitions do deter because the cost to the perp is so high. So what’s the stick for? actually it’s to ensure compliance nothing more. Even in this the side handle baton is far more effective than the straight sticks we use
n side handles require more training as they are not instinctive to use, but they deliver more power & have a greater range of applications, most notably, a well aimed blow to the thighs or arms can complete disable the target for a few minutes, so restraints can be slipped on.
n So far we’ve seen why brutality is psychologically ineffective & what the exact use of the stick is for. Now let’s look at why it’s so damaging for the police as an institution. Fundamentally when the police start using the cane for punishment as opposed to compliance youve
n already crossed into illegality. Here for Eg, the officer says RETALIATE. Remember the police is not meant to RETALIATE - blatant illegality as is. Then we get into mixing of functions- identification (police) apprehend (police), punish (judiciary)
n so I hear you say, but this is normal and necessary in a country like India. No it isn’t, in fact this is the roof of the problem. You have no problems when I say “illegality is fungible - one form of illegality turns into other forms - cattle smugglers are also drug dealers
n arms peddlers, money launderers, people smugglers, brothel owners & local Thugs”. But when I ask for the same principle to be applied to police you all start shitting bricks saying “its necessary, this isn’t Europe”. Understand police brutality only betrays bad training,
n bad discipline, bad leadership, corruption, to name a few. Invariably if it’s tolerated by government & encouraged by people like you as “necessary”, it turns into a power trip and will be used against you. Note much of the police corruption & it’s link up with crime networks
n like dawood ibrahim started off in the “encounter killing” culture. Finally it was this same culture that led to corruption that led up to the torture & jailing of Sadhvi Pragya & Col Purohit. You’re of course dumb enough to cheer when the Hyderabad rapists are encountered
n but then unwilling to accept you through your cheering acceptance of this, bear responsibility for what happened to Pragya & Purohit. I realise IQ isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but at least don’t make fools of yourselves in public with your unresearched positions
n wrong conclusion - “india is not israel, india is not Europe” correct conclusion “Crime in india is linked to police criminality in india, of which the clearest symptom is police brutality”
