Creating the appearance of a lie on "the other side" (which is simply the presentation of factual evidence) is all the excuse people who want to believe in lies need to declare that everybody is lying, when it's clear one party is engaged in a strategic disinformation campaign.
Once people who want to believe in lies have convinced themselves that everybody is lying in equal measure, they use it as license to believe whatever it was they wanted to believe in the first place, then credit their willingness to consider "both sides" as open-mindedness.
