I see some bizarre things here defending Trump, so I’m going to make a few points as to why his efforts dealing with the pandemic have been unbelievably terrible (thread).
First, don't waste a second saying “what about Cuomo?” or whoever. People can evaluate their performances, but they are irrelevant to Trump’s disastrous failure. Trump is president, he has the CDC, FEMA, & he would have had a pandemic prevention task force, if he didn’t fire them
People, including apparently Trump’s own trade representative, were warning of the spread of coronavirus as early as mid-January. Trump trivialized the disease and literally mocked public figures and the media for raising concerns.
Furthermore, even now he doesn’t seem to show any understanding of what should have been done. He boasts about his partial travel bans against people who had been in Wuhan and later the European Union.
Even these were terribly done, with the latter leading to massive lines at airports that almost certainly helped spread the virus. Also, for some bizarre reason, Trump did not originally include the UK in the travel ban.
Trump still doesn’t seem to realize that having been warned of the pandemic in January (he insists he recognized the danger all along, in contradicting numerous public statements), he should have taken real steps to prepare us, not just ban travel from a country he doesn’t like.
This would have meant making sure that we have an effective test& that it is widely available. He didn’t make sure we have an effective test & the tests we have now are still not widely available. Incredibly, his task force is just now thinking of developing a testing strategy.
He also would have made sure that we had adequate stockpiles of necessary equipment, such as ventilators, face masks, & protective gear for front line workers. We clearly did not. He bizarrely blames Obama for the shortages, even though he has been president for more than 3 years
The list of failures is considerably longer & Trump adds to it daily, but the basic point is that his incompetence has caused the country immense pain and needlessly suffering. Tens of thousands will die and tens of millions are losing jobs because of Donald Trump's incompetence
