Contrast b/w Moses, Jesus, Mohammad

Moses - Not permitted to enter the "promised land". His people went ahead while he died

Jesus - Crucified. His followers were persecuted for a few centuries

Mohammad - Conquered his promised land. Achieved a political victory in his lifetime
To what extent does this shape these three religions of the West?

Moses and Jesus did not achieve major political victories. They couldn't even save their own lives

While Mohammad achieved political and military victories
Given this foundational setting, was Islam bound to be inherently more militaristic than Judaism and Christianity?

Degree of emulation depends on what you have to offer

If what you have is perceived to be finer, then it gets emulated

Mongols conquered much of Central Asia in early 13th cen. But the Ilkhanate Mongols hardly "mongolized" local culture. Rather they got persianized themselves
Not all cultures are the same

Nor are their merits and demerits

There's a reason Western ideas in 19th cen influenced Indian intelligentsia far more than Islamic ideas did in say 13th cen
To put it crudely, the conquest of the Turko-Mongols was largely a political one. Not an intellectual conquest

So Indian thought was not greatly transformed

Whereas the encounter with the West ended in an intellectual setback. Thus transforming ideas more fundamentally

One of the oft-repeated criticisms of Hindu thought is that it is too "other-worldly", too metaphysical, and too unconcerned with the mundane world of affairs

Vidura Neeti in the Mahabharata is a fine refutation of this criticism

But strangely it seems rather underrated
Vidura Neeti occupies eight full chapters in Udyoga Parva in the Mahabharata

While it is very widely known, it does not hog as much attention either among lay people or academics as the Bhagavad Gita or for that matter Brahma Sutras
Vidura Neeti is anything but other-worldly. It concerns itself with leadership, yes. But also quotidian ethics

So though it takes the form of a dialogue between DhrtarAshtra and Vidura, its relevance is not just for statesmen, but for anyone who is engaging in social interaction

Estimating age of Mahabharata characters can be fun

(note: This is not what the text would suggest)

Bhishma -

Likely 20 when he took the vow
40 - when Vichitravirya dies
60 - when Pandu is coronated
80 - when Kuru princes come of age
100 - at the time of Bharata war
I know this is not what the original text would suggest.

In the text, you have Arjuna's long pilgrimage during the Indraprastha years, the long reign in Indraprastha preceding the 13 years of "exile"

So strictly going by the text would give an implausibly high number
Epic also suggests Kripa/ Kripi were discovered by Shantanu some years after Bhishma's birth?

That would make Drona, Kripa just a few yrs younger than Bhishma! And more than a generation older than Dhritarashtra

You don't get that sense in popular depictions of these characters
