What captured me in my later 20s and has held me fast for 35 years & ruined me for a life apart from Bible study was the virtually endless foreshadowing in the OT of what would be fulfilled, perfected or explained in the New. How Scripture connected from Genesis to Revelation. ->
Our thoughts move today to the garden where 1 of the most astounding of those connections is found. Don’t miss it. Read Gen 2-3 with careful attention to the fall of man in the Garden of Eden then every Gospel account of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Doesn’t take a scholar->
to see the ties and the blatant reversals put in motion in the Garden of Gethsemane & finished on the Cross. Take a pen & record every single concept or detail that can be found in both accounts. Don’t overlook how the ground was cursed & how Christ would wear a crown of thorns.
Don’t miss that the nakedness of Adam & Eve was covered by skins necessitating bloodshed & death of an animal & Jesus would be stripped of His clothing & bear their-& our-shame on a tree. I want desperately for many to catch this fire. There’s nothing like the study of Scripture.
Of the countless things it accomplishes in us, 1st & foremost the privilege to know God the Father & His Son & our Savior Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, it vastly increases our confidence that God has been ordering all things to the last detail according to a PLAN.
An eternal plan pre-dating creation. This knowledge is essential to our sense of security in Christ even in our present perils. We cannot speak for God concerning this pandemic but we can know this: He has most certainly not been dethroned nor has the work of Christ been undone.
Behold the Lamb of God, Beloved. The Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. There’s no story like our story. Every other great story is but a ray of light emanating from the brilliance of God’s most glorious Story of Redemption.

Don’t tell me you’re too busy for Bible study. Get your tail in the Scriptures. There’s nothing like it. There is no one like Jesus.

Can’t think of much that would be more devastating right now than, in this isolation, to feel isolated from God. To feel overlooked. Unseen. Afraid & utterly alone like you don’t matter or shut out like you’ve done too much wrong for Him to be there for you now. It’s not true.->
I wish I could express the kindness I’ve experienced in Christ. The foundness in my lostness. The well of grace in my failures. He’s seen me through so much. Stayed with me when I was a wreck. He is not partial. He loves no one more than you. He sees you. He’s there with you. ->
Just call out His name. There’s no name like the name of Jesus. No presence like His presence. No temptation He has not faced. No depth of suffering He has not plunged. No barrier He cannot cross. No failure He cannot forgive. Can’t earn His love. It’s pure grace. Cry out to Him.

We go with Jesus to Gethsemane with a deeper intensity this Holy Week. Like Peter, James & John, we cannot fully enter in. We will not always stay awake. But we can feel the chill in the air of that early Spring night. We can sense the darkness is not just the dark of the night.
Go. Go sit at that edge this week. Take your dread & your fear of death. Go. Sit a stone’s throw from Jesus. Hear Him ask for the cup to pass. Take your weakness. Your sleepiness. Your wish to be elsewhere. Take it where it belongs. Take it to the garden. You’ll find Him there.
He promises that those who seek Him will find Him. Judas even knew where to find Him that night. Jesus will not hide from you there in that garden. He’ll be deeper in than your eyes can see but He’s there, submitting to the will of His Father. He knows you’re scared of the dark.

There’s a gift of desperation hidden beneath the rubble of destruction. Words that have been left for dead by you, implausible & archaic, those words, like the stone cold body of Lazarus in a tomb, will start to twitch. They’ll catch their breath, lungs rising, falling. Warming.
They will sit up on the page. They’ll then stand & begin to walk & their grave clothes will unravel, folds of fabric dangling like ribbons. And those words you thought old & dead will open their mouths & their tongues will be loosed & they will speak.
