Listen to public defenders: “We’ve been sounding the alarm for more than 3 weeks, &now we’re on the verge of the virus sweeping thru the jail. I don’t think prosecutors have gotten the message about how serious this is. They’re moving far too slowly. Now people are getting sick.” 
Last weekend, the Alameda County (includes Oakland) Sheriff announced the first positive COVID-19 test at Santa Rita. By Wednesday there were 10 more positive tests. Decreasing the jail population is the best way to stop the spread.
The Alameda Public Defender estimates there are approximately 200 people currently serving time who are scheduled for release in the next six months.

Chief Defender Brendon Woods (@BrendonWoodsPD): “We want those people out right now. What possible justification can the DA offer to keep them locked up for three more weeks in the midst of this virus? A county jail sentence should not be a potential death sentence.”
Just as experts warned, the virus is moving through jails and prisons like wildfire because inmates cannot socially distance and often have little access to soap and other hygiene products
Yesterday, NYT reported Cook County Jail in Chicago is the single largest source of U.S. virus infections. At least 238 of 5,000 inmates have tested positive there; at least 115 staff members. The virus also is quickly spreading through Riker’s Island in New York.
“It’s ridiculous that we still have people in custody serving short county jail sentences. This virus has changed everything. We need to shelve old ideas about punishment & just get people out of this dangerous situation. The best way to stop the spread is to release people.”
