NY has 161,807 cases of COVID-19, of which 87,028 cases are in NYC. Yet, the media act as if Cuomo has led the nation in response to the crisis. Yeah, he's led in having more cases than any other state in the union.
And, no it's not a population density issue 46.3% of NY's cases are outside of NYC. 2/3 of the state's population lives in NYC meaning 74,779 cases are outside the densely populated area of the NYC area. The next closest state, NJ, has 54,588.
NY has a population density of 421 people per square mile vs NJ having a population density of 1211 people per square mile. So, if population density is your Cuomo defense, then NJ should have more cases than NY, it's nearly three times as densely populated as NY.
Cuomo cried for 30K ventilators, he refused to buy more ventilators that his own public health officials told him he would need. In fact, he was still demanding those ventilators on 2 April despite still not using his own state's stockpile.
On 2 APR NY still had 2200 ventilators left in its own stockpile, never mind the 4400+ the federal government sent the state and the 1100 sent by WA, OR, & CA (states that actually have done much better) & another 1000+ from China.
Since 2 APR the number of ICU admissions as well as hospital admissions has fallen according to Cuomo himself, but he still wants those ventilators. Why governor? You want the federal government to pay for what you were supposed to have purchased?
You mocked the president over hydroxychloroquine, then two weeks later start asking for it yourself. Why the change of heart governor? Why does the media fawn over your 'leadership' when you've done the worst job of any governor. Your state has more cases than ANY country!
Cuomo just admitted ICU admissions for COVID-19 is a negative number today and the three day average of hospital admissions is down. But, his supporters still claim he needs those 30K ventilators.
Cuomo is an example of what NOT to do during a pandemic. Why does the media like him so much? They say he speaks better than the president and that makes him a real leader. He led his state to disaster so you can credit him for that.
His excuse for not buying those ventilators he keeps claiming to need? Cuomo, "Nobody could see this coming, that we would need those ventilators." Yet, HIS own public health officials told him year after year he'd need more in the event of a major pandemic.
The Nation on Cuomo and how he helped get the state into the mess it's in today by cutting hospital beds & medicaid. Cuomo, "New York has excess capacity of hospital beds, that it’s too expensive and not needed and we need to reduce spending."thenation.com/article/politi…
So, the great leader of NY who his supporters say planned so well is a model for the nation, yet he's responsible for gutting the state's ability for dealing with a pandemic. Before you come whining in support of Cuomo, The Nation is a progressive media outlet.
Cuomo wants the federal government to pay for what he was supposed to take care of as a governor. Oh, he's so progressive he's been gutting medicaid in his state since he took office in 2011.
Don't believe me that NY could've done better? Just look at what Obama's former CDC Director and the former head of NYC Public health had to say in this article: syracuse.com/coronavirus/20…
Cuomo also did another 'great' thing for NY by closing hospitals reducing the amount of beds available saying it was too costly to maintain those beds.
Most densely populated cities:

Union City, N.J.: 54,138 persons/sq. mile
West New York, N.J.: 52,815 persons/sq. mile
Hoboken, N.J.: 42,484 persons/sq. mile
New York, N.Y.: 28,211 persons/sq. mile
Passaic, N.J.: 22,424 persons/sq. mile
New Jersey, as pointed out previously is the most densely populated state. Comparison NYC to LA. LA has half the population of NYC, but only 7955 cases. That's only about 10% or so of NYC.
So, again trying to defend Cuomo solely on population density is an asinine argument. Because he doesn't have the most densely populated state or city, but still has the majority of cases. Population density is a factor, but not the only factor.
Cuomo as well as DeBlasio delayed closing schools in NY even NY Times and Politico pointed out that error in judgment. politico.com/states/new-yor…

nytimes.com/2020/04/08/nyr…
New York is the 7th most densely populated state. SO, if density is the primary driver, why are the six more densely populated states not having higher cases even in comparison to just NYC? NY ranks 12th most densely populated when territories & DC are included.
