The bit that I clipped - “If the UK’s decision makers find out ... I suspect they will not find out” - points to a very real and challenging problem. How to provide constructive and useful challenge at a time of national unity, when the preference is for bluff patriotism.
As ever, the challenge is to find that slither of light - the place somewhere between the ego and the conscience - that permits people to change their mind quickly without the theatre of having to “climb down” or admit they were wrong.
There isn’t time right now for recriminations and enquiries. But fast and timely tweaks - in the BS language of innovation, “agility” - are needed. Perhaps it is not so much a question of politics as of capability and collaboration.
But this will become more and more difficult: people with plausible alternatives are being ignored or “managed” and frustration will grow. I think this is a time for holding space. As we grieve and feel helpless, the strength to do that will be harder to find.
