108 years ago today, on 11 April 1912, Herbert Henry Asquith introduced his home rule Bill, the Liberal Party’s third since 1886.
Following the 1910 election, the Irish Party under John Redmond held the balance of power and the Bill was the price of support.
This Bill offered
only limited self-government & asserted the supreme authority of the UK Parliament “over all persons, matters, & things in Ireland”.
It was 19 years since William Gladstone had introduced his 2nd Home Rule Bill.
The bill had some famous names supporting it but you would not need
to be a detective to work out who.
The Government of Ireland Act was finally passed in August 2014 but the Suspensory Act ensured that Home Rule would be postponed for the duration of The Great War.
