The city of Ghadames on the edge of the Saharan desert in Libya is maybe one of the finest examples of desert urbanism still in existence. Inhabited since the 4th millennia B.C., many of its 1300 houses have been continually inhabited, improved, expanded, for over 3000 years.
Founded around an oasis, it has seen many empires come and go. The Romans called it Cydamus, and built a permanent garrison. It is possible it was visited by emperor Septimius Severus (145-211, a native of the nearby city Leptis Magna) in 202.
From above it doesn't resemble a town as we know it, but it is divided into three distinct neighborhoods of 3000 houses, baths, mosques, square and markets, connected by overbuilt alleyways, 1,5-3m wide with openings (light wells) to allow air and daylight about every 15 meters.

The Izumo Taisha, the Grand Shrine of Izumo, and Mt. Yakumo in the background, as mentioned in the text. In the old days the trees would have been smaller, but moderns like forest shrines, so here we are.
The 1300 years old design of the "cloud brackets" at Houryu-ji, mimicking the shape of the clouds that can often be seen over nearby mountains.

Every desirable aspect of urbanism is achieved by building on the human scale, and conversely, every problem of urbanism is solved, eliminated or mitigated, by returning to the human scale of traditional cities.
A human scaled city means it is a walkable city. People are healthier, happier, live longer due to more exercise, less noise, less pollution, less stress, less wasted time. A walkable town can function off grid and so is less dependent on faraway supply chains, fuel, etc.
A human scaled city is democratic. On foot everyone has to share the same streets. It fosters rather than alienates, a civil society. People desire the human scaled, the smaller the plot, the more fine grained the neighborhood, the more valuable it gets.
